The Pitons in St Lucia, Caribbean. These are volcanic plugs. The leftover middles of old volcanoes. They are still steaming at the base, with bubbling, boiling mud.

Vertical beds and caves at St Ninians beach near Isle of Whithorn, Galloway. The sea caves were left high and dry when the land rebounded after the great ice sheet melted after the last ice age. St Nubian lived in one of the caves.

Carvings in granite at Threave gardens, Castle Douglas, Scotland. Note at top right of the boulder is an interface with a black rock called dolerite. Dolerite is the same chemistry as basalt. The only difference is that basalt comes out of the ground as lava, but dolerite stays underground. So, the two magmas were next to each other in the magma chamber. The granite was probably there first and the dolerite cut through it.
