New customer, previous sweeps didn’t bother to check the chimneys properly. Customer advised heavy water ingress into upper bedroom, staining on walls and chimney not functioning properly. We carried out a flash cctv and inspection, using also a drone. It didn’t take long to discover the dreadful situation. We advised on a local trusted contractor to repair.

One reason not to chance a chimney sweep or DIY….always check they are trained, accredited and competent. Hetas or Guild of master chimney sweeps being the required standard. 😊

New customer today recently moved into a house, previous owner stated they did their own chimney sweeping every year. I knew or suspected this job would not be straight forward. Fast forward…where do I start definitely a DIY install, blocked flue with chunks of creosote/soot (10 kgs) Heavy corrosion on inside of flue, cracked with separation allowing insulation leaking into flue, wooden blocks supporting stove, all the stove bricks deteriorated badly, insecure terminal which fell off, non insulated flue pipe into ceiling, plasterboard wall, no CO alarm. Basically a death trap. This has to be stripped out and a new installation. The new house survey wasnt up to scratch.

Safety-critical work such as chimney sweeping needs a clear head, integrity and continued professional training. It doesn’t need a 12 hour shift designed to squeeze every last penny out of the diary and customers.

Case in point: we recently attended a house, where a previous local sweep had swept the chimney. No paperwork left or certificate or accreditation membership. The new customer complained the CO alarm in the kitchen kept activating, she felt unwell and the stove wasn’t functioning properly. We inspected it and found it blocked with chicken wire and excessive soot. The previous sweep had deliberately inserted chicken wire to act as a bird deterrent. How ridiculous and dangerous. When the customer tried to get it sorted, the previous sweep simply blocked their number — because apparently there’s no profit in putting your mistakes right. We won’t name em but you know who u are!

Some sweeps rush jobs, miss things, or just don’t know or care and then hide behind a bit of patter and polish. We don’t.

We work proper hours because tired, lazy or incompetent sweeps make mistakes. Every job deserves the time to be done correctly, safely and professionally — without cutting corners just to squeeze another job into the diary.
