✨ Dydh da! (Good day!)

It's Speak Cornish Week and we're joining the celebration here at Falmouth Art Gallery.

As you explore the gallery this week, keep an eye out for our special Speak Cornish cards. We've selected objects within paintings of our Collections Display and translated their names into Cornish (Kernewek).

Can you spot them all? It's a fresh way to look a little closer at the artworks, discover new details and learn a few Cornish words along the way.

With thanks to Cornwall Council's Cornish Language Office for the translations and accompanying audio clips.

Come and discover the simple pleasure of putting pen, paint and paper together.

Our next Art for Wellbeing course, Creative Journaling: Marks, Words & Traces, invites you to explore creativity without pressure or expectation. Through drawing, writing, collage and playful experimentation, you'll build a personal journal that reflects your ideas, observations and imagination.

There’s no right or wrong way to keep a creative journal – just space to experiment, reflect and enjoy the process. So, whether you're a complete beginner or looking to rekindle your creativity, this welcoming course offers a chance to connect with yourself and others through making.

13th - 27th July, 1-3pm, Falmouth Art Gallery
£30 for the course - book your place via our website: https://shop.falmouthartgallery.com/products/art-for-wellbeing-short-course-creative-journaling-marks-words-traces

We were saddened to learn of the death of artist David Kemp (1945–2026).

David Kemp was a distinctive and much-loved figure in British contemporary art, celebrated for transforming discarded materials into extraordinary sculptures that combined humour, mythology, environmental awareness and a deep connection to place. Living and working in Cornwall for many years, he drew inspiration from the county's industrial heritage, creating works that invited us to look again at the objects and landscapes around us.

We are proud to currently have one of David's works on display at Falmouth Art Gallery, where visitors can experience firsthand the imagination, wit and creativity that characterised his practice.

Our thoughts are with his family, friends and all those whose lives he touched through his art.

Read more about David Kemp's life and work in this obituary from The Guardian:

These wonderful portraits were created by students from Truroand PenwithCollege 's Preparation for Independence and Employment course, who have been visiting Falmouth Art Gallery for monthly sessions throughout the year.

They were inspired by 'I, Ken' by Ken Nwadiogbu, currently on display in our Mirrors: Reflecting on Identity exhibition. We love seeing how each young artist has brought their own personality and perspective to the project.

Thank you to the students and staff for a fantastic year of creativity and collaboration and to The Ruth Borchard Collection for the loan of the inspirational artwork. Mirrors: Reflecting on Identity runs until Sep 26th and is free to visit.

❗🎟️ Tickets on sale now! 🎟️❗

Our youth group, SPLANNA have collaborated with 99p films for a screening of Jo in the Water.

The film centres on Jo Bateman, a retired physiotherapist and passionate sea swimmer who takes on one of the UK's largest water companies in an effort to protect the ocean from devastating sewage pollution.

SPLANNA have been creating artwork all year inspired by stories they themselves have written, exploring our relationship with nature, with a focus on the River Fal, one of the most polluted rivers in the country.

The stories and artworks will be on display and available to purchase at the film screening, with all proceeds going to VoW: Voices of Water Foundation. A charity working to allow rivers to be recognised as living entities.

Join us in the library on the 25th and make a difference to our rivers! Check our website for more info and tickets ℹ️🎟️

Apparently art can help keep you young… 👀

A recent study found that engaging with arts and culture may be linked to slower biological ageing.

So we're not saying our Art for Wellbeing course is the fountain of youth... but we're not not saying it either. 😉

Join artist Eve Bourrat for three relaxed, creative sessions exploring identity through collage, paint and mixed media in a welcoming and supportive environment.
