A Cinema in South Georgia A Cinema in South Georgia 'A Cinema in South Georgia'

Join four Eyemouth men on the Island just in time for the start of the whaling season.

Share the laughs, the sorrows and the songs as Jim, Archie, Fraser and wee Robbie emerge from history to tell us the moving story that is "A Cinema in South Georgia". An entirely new and original piece of ensemble theatre written by Jeffrey Mayhew and Susan Wilson. Writer's Note:

How many times have you heard yourself say "I wish I had asked about that before it was too late". Well that was the

situation I found myself in regarding my father's whaling days after he passed away in June 2000. My quest to find out more led me to several local men who had whaling connections or first hand experience of life as a whaler. These interviews proved to be the stimulus I needed to carry on with my research which has now culminated in the production of this project which is called "A Cinema In South Georgia". During my journey I was fortunate enough to be introduced to a man called Jeffrey Mayhew who, I later discovered, has a successful musical/theatrical career and who appeared to be as "hooked" as I am after our first meeting. We have collaborated over the past year and the fruits of our labour are about to manifest themselves in this multi-genre piece. In the meantime I have other crucial members of our "crew" to pick up before we can embark for our destination. I will introduce them in due course. Thank you for your interest. Please climb aboard and enjoy this voyage of discovery with us!

10 years ago we’d be well into our run at the Edinburgh Fringe Pleasance Venue by now. Thanks to all involved and forever grateful to Jeffrey Mayhew and everyone else who believed in and supported our project x
Catch Archie (Mark Vevers) who represented my dad in the play in Shortland Street RIGHT NOW!

In our Roll Call, you will find a list of men who were in South Georgia during the whaling era. The Whalers’ Memory Bank could not have happened if not for their willingness to share stories, photographs, films, and memorabilia. We wish to acknowledge those who went there to find work, find adventure, and find community with one another.

This Roll Call is in no way exhaustive and we want to keep adding to this digital collection. So, if you would like to contribute a name, please fill out the form at the bottom of the webpage with as much detail as possible.

Ruby Gantry or Taxi was the Christmas Day options for A Cinema in South Georgia in 1959 (65 years ago) with possibly a snifter of h***h on the side! Small comfort for men who were overwintering down the ice and so far away from home and family.
No FaceTime, WhatsApp or Skype in those days. A telegram if you were lucky 😔

A local fisherman’s tale and so nice to see my dad getting a mention! ❤️ Gone but not forgotten!
