Tarp #22
Devon-based Gary Orange has been chainsaw carving for around 23 years. He learned to carve in Ridgway Rendezvous in the USA in 2003. Working from his base near Exeter to create bespoke commissions for private gardens, schools and public organisations.

His work spans everything from seating areas to large-scale sculptural installations, and he's a familiar sight at country fairs and festivals across the South West. Having been brought up by a military family where his father was the drummer in a marching Pipes and Drums band, Gary has an affinity for Carve Carrbridge.

Reflecting on competing at Carve Carrbridge, Gary said: "There is something deeply special about Carrbridge — the people, the pipes and drums, the international chainsaw carvers, the mountains.

It really doesn't get any better than this."

He describes himself as a travelling chainsaw carver, who set up carved seating areas at shows fairs and festivals and sell on the roadside.

Ha ha ...yes when I was working this week i did notice a few angry drivers with kids Saturday and Sunday driving in lanes like there was only them allowed to drive at you😁instead of pulling into passing spots, then looking at me in my 20ft work van like I'm doing something wrong,I always drive like I'm going to meet a non reverser in the lanes....you just know it's going to happen.

Holidaymakers driving into Cornwall could soon have to prove they know how to use reverse gear under controversial new plans to build a "Reverse Test Centre" on the Cornish side of the Tamar.

Before being allowed onto Cornwall's famous network of narrow country lanes, motorists would first complete a short assessment where examiners ask them to demonstrate how to select reverse gear before tackling a purpose-built mock Cornish lane.

The test route features six-foot hedges, tractors and an oncoming Camborne man in an uninsured V-reg Talbot Sunbeam with absolutely no intention of reversing.

Drivers must first demonstrate to the examiner where reverse gear is located in their vehicle and how to engage it before safely reversing down the lane without attempting a seventeen-point U-turn like they're some sort of unpopular government policy.

To make the experience as realistic as possible, the tractor driver will "stare daggers" directly into the motorist's eyes for the entire test, while nearby pedestrians immediately whip out their phones and begin filming, secretly hoping the driver ends up in the hedge so they can post the video on Facebook.

Those who successfully complete the assessment will receive a temporary LOL plate, short for Lane Operation Licence, which they must display on the front and rear of their vehicle while in Cornwall.

Drivers who fail won't be turned away from Cornwall but will instead be restricted to driving only on the A30 and the A39 Atlantic Highway for the duration of their stay.

Project manager Derek Parkin said work is expected to begin in "a couple of three months."
