The eleven artists represented in this exhibition are all members of the abstract art group based at the Phoenix Art Centre in Exeter and study under the guidance of international abstract painter Patrick Jones.

The Abstract Art Group was started by Patrick in 1994. The main aim was to combat isolation of artists in the South West from international developments in Abstract Painting.
It is designed to broaden understanding of the concept of Abstraction and develop a personal language through critical comment and mentoring.

The history of abstraction is discussed; the move of influence from France to the United States; Abstract Expressionism to Colour Field Painting; second and third generation exponents; these are all grist for the mill of understanding and practise.
Not to be afraid of Painting is a key to experimentation with materials, allowing the mind to expand, chances to be taken, and the Spirit to lift.
Having fun is encouraged just as play is the watchword for experimental painting.

You are invited to enjoy the work on show as it is the product of thought, feeling, intuition and a genuine concern for the ongoing development of abstract painting.

We are introducing one of our participating artists

Victoria Mardon

"My work is led by my love of colour. I explore how patterns and flat shapes of colour interact to display a sense of light, movement, depth and energy.

I use graphics software to realise the design, composition and colours for my work; after studying graphic design at university it is a natural way for me to experiment. I then take the concept and draw it onto my canvas. Before painting begins, I take a long time to ensure my colour palette is just right.

I am inspired by Pop Art and Op Art, with Bridget Riley, Andy Warhol, Anni Albers and Joseph Albers being my main influences."
