CALL OUT: DEVON COMMUNITY AND MENTAL HEALTH CHARITIES

Awkward Pigeon Theatre Company is developing a new dark comedy, Just Be, written by Teignmouth playwright Alex King and highly commended by the National Theatre.

Set in a mindfulness class, the play explores themes including mental health, climate anxiety, disability, isolation, class, race and community.
The play uses humour to open up honest conversations about the world we’re living in.

Following a successful scratch performance at Exeter Phoenix, we are now planning the next stage of development and a small-scale Devon tour.

We’re looking to connect with local organisations, charities and community groups whose work relates to any of the following:

* mental health and wellbeing
* climate anxiety / environmental action
* community support and connection

We’d love to explore ways to collaborate, which could include:
•helping raise awareness of your charity on our social media channels and signposting audiences to your organisation during post-show discussion
* sharing information about our performances with your community
* informal post-show discussions with the audience, helping shape conversations around the themes of the play
* discounted tickets for your members

If this sounds like something your organisation might be interested in, or if you know a group who you think might be interested, please get in touch.

Send us a message or email us at [email protected]

We are excited to hear from you and look forward to creating something meaningful together

Two actors sought for scratch performance at Exeter Phoenix, Monday 13th October 2025.

Awkward Pigeon Theatre are seeking two actors to complete our cast for a scratch night run by Exeter Phoenix and Exeter Northcott Theatre.

Actors must be available from 3pm on Monday 13th October in Exeter.

Remuneration:
This is an unpaid opportunity, although we can provide travel expenses.

If the scratch night is successful, we hope to stage the full production in 2026, which will be paid on a profit-share basis as a minimum. We hope this scratch night is a chance to meet collaborators for this project.

About the play:
We are staging a 20 minute extract from Just Be! by Alex King - A comic drama about meditation and the challenge of offering any kind of spiritual leadership in these troubled times. The play covers themes of race, disability, conspiracy theories and class, and was 'highly commended' by the National Theatre's reading team.

How to apply:
To express your interest, please send an email with your CV or Spotlight link to [email protected] as soon as possible. We will then send you sides for the characters we are looking to cast. We would also need:
• Your availability to rehearse in Exeter between 1st and 13th October
• A recording of yourself reading the role you're interested in from the short excerpts we send you.

All by 27th September.

The characters:

Nad
Playing age: 20s
Gender identity: female
Working class, global majority background preferred.

Nad's devil-may-care, cynical exterior hides a playful, kind heart. Mindfulness isn't for her, she's only here to fulfil her rehab requirements... right?

Matthew
Playing age: 30s
Gender identity: male
Black or Afro-Carrabean

Eloquent and intelligent, Matthew has had to prove himself his entire life. His patience is tested when instead of an in-depth discussion of meditation practice he finds himself in a class full of amateurs...
