🐟 Fish-Care Sunday: Setting Up a Coldwater Tank! ❄️

Thinking about keeping coldwater fish? A coldwater aquarium can be a simple and rewarding setup, with lots of possibilities depending on the fish you want to keep.

🪨 Substrate & décor – Gravel, sand, plants and ornaments give your fish somewhere to explore and hide.

💧 Filtration – A good filter is essential for keeping the water clean and maintaining a healthy biological environment.

🌡️ Temperature – Unlike tropical aquariums, coldwater tanks don't usually need a heater. The important thing is keeping the temperature stable and suitable for your chosen fish.

💦 Water conditioner – Always treat tap water to remove chlorine and chloramine before adding it to your aquarium.

🐟 Choose your fish first! Different coldwater species have different space and compatibility requirements, so make sure your tank is large enough for the adult size of the fish you want to keep.

🍽️ Feeding – A good-quality coldwater food, fed in appropriate amounts, will help keep your fish healthy without unnecessarily affecting water quality.

🐠 Redtoothed Triggerfish! 🦷🌊

We currently have two Redtoothed Triggerfish in stock! These striking marine fish are full of personality and make a fantastic feature fish for the right setup.

🌊 Environment: They need a spacious, well-established marine aquarium with plenty of rockwork and swimming space. They can be active and inquisitive, so a secure tank with plenty to explore is ideal.

🪸 Not reef safe: Redtoothed Triggers are not coral safe and should be kept in a FOWLR (Fish Only With Live Rock) setup. A fish-only setup can also be simpler to maintain than a reef tank, as you don't have the additional requirements that come with keeping corals.

🐍 Great for predator setups: Their size and temperament can make them a good choice for a predatory marine aquarium, alongside suitable tank mates such as tangs and surgeonfish, large angel fish, groupers, large wrasses and other peaceful fish.

🍽️ Feeding: They enjoy a varied diet of quality marine foods, including meaty foods such as prawns, mussels, squid and other suitable frozen foods.

🐟 Temperament: They have plenty of character and can become territorial, particularly as they mature, so tank size and carefully chosen tank mates are important.

If you're looking for a fish with a bit of attitude and plenty of personality, these two are definitely worth a look! 👀

We stock Salifert water testing kits, with individual tests available so you can test exactly what you need, as well as NT Labs test kits for a more complete check.

🪸 New Coral Has Arrived! 🌊

We’ve been waiting for a while for this delivery – a special shipment of corals arrive directly from Australia! 🇦🇺🪸 These can be difficult to get hold of, so we’re really excited to have them in the shop.

Alongside our Australian shipment, we also have a selection of frags we’ve propagated ourselves, giving you plenty of smaller options to add some colour and life to your reef.

✨ Australian corals + home-grown frags = lots to have a look at!

🦐 Tropical Shrimp! 🌿

Small, colourful and full of character, freshwater shrimp are a fantastic addition to the right tropical aquarium!

We currently stock a huge variety, including:

🧡 Sunkissed
🤍 Pinocchio

❤️ Crystal Red
🍒 Red Cherry
🧡 Orange Cherry
💛 Yellow Cherry
💙 Blue Pearl
❄️ Snowball

🌿 Care: Shrimp do best in a mature, stable aquarium with good water quality, plenty of plants and hiding places. They spend much of their time grazing on algae and biofilm around the tank.

🍽️ They can also be supplemented with dedicated shrimp foods and occasional vegetables, but avoid overfeeding as maintaining good water quality is particularly important.

🐟 Tank mates: They're peaceful, but their small size means they should be kept with suitable, peaceful fish. Some fish may see smaller shrimp or babies as a snack!

With so many colours and varieties to choose from, shrimp are a great way to add something a little different to your tropical setup. 🦐💙

🌊 Thinking About Setting Up a Marine Aquarium? 🐠

Marine tanks can seem complicated at first, but once you understand the basics, there are so many different setups you can create. 🪸

🪨 Rock & substrate – Rock provides structure, hiding places and a natural environment for your livestock. We have lots of marine rock available in different shapes and sizes, from small pieces to larger feature rocks.

💧 Water – You can use ready-mixed saltwater or mix your own using our 0 TDS RO water and marine salt.

💦 Filtration & flow – Good filtration and water movement help maintain water quality and create a healthy environment for your fish and invertebrates.

🌡️ Temperature – Most marine aquariums are kept around 24–26°C, although it's always important to check the requirements of the livestock you want to keep.

💡 Lighting – We have blue and white marine lights available, interchangeable for day and night, and depending on whether you're keeping fish only or corals too.

🧪 Water testing – Regular testing is an important part of marine keeping. We have water testing kits available, or you can bring a water sample into the shop and we can test it for you.

🐠 Think about your livestock – Different fish, invertebrates and corals have different requirements, so it's worth deciding what you want to keep before choosing your tank, equipment and stocking levels.

🐟 And don't forget the tank! We have tanks available, along with the equipment and essentials needed to get a marine aquarium established.
