The Year 3 probationer girls after Evensong today.

This was a lovely evening!

This was a lovely evening!

Our beautiful Chapel in the Old Palace echoed with the magnificent sounds of the organ this week when it hosted the annual 'Bombarde of Organists' concert! 🎶

This year's event showcased the exceptional talents of five of our young organists, spanning the ages of 11 to 17.

The evening began with a captivating performance by our youngest organist, Izzy (Year 6), who demonstrated impressive confidence and technical skill on the complex instrument. Freddie (Year 8 ) then took to the organ, delivering a mature performance which filled the Chapel's resonant space impeccably! 🙌🏼

The depth of talent in the Senior School was firmly on display with seamless consecutive recitals from Samuel and Lukasz, who are both in Year 9. They tackled demanding pieces with precision and artistic flair, highlighting the bright future of organ music here at King's.

Bringing the evening to a spectacular close was Thomas (Year 12), who is our Organ Scholar. His advanced command of the instrument and expressive registration choices provided a fitting finale to a wonderful celebration of live music! 👏🏽

We are hugely proud of both of these stars!

Huge congratulations to Izzy and Thomas for their achievements in the 2026 Choir Schools' Association (CSA) Chorister Composition Competition! 🥳

Izzy, who is in Year 6 at King's Ely Prep and a member of The Choristers of Ely Cathedral Choir, is the overall winner in the Junior category of this year's contest.

Thomas has been Highly Commended in the Senior category of the competition, having won it last year. Thomas is in Year 12, is a former Ely Cathedral Chorister, and is a King's Ely Sixth Form Organ Scholar.

Speaking about her win, Izzy, who has also recently started to play the organ, said: "I am surprised and happy, and also very proud of myself. I really enjoyed composing the anthem, and I hope to do more composition in the future."

The annual competition is organised in partnership with the David Willcocks Memorial Trust. It encourages choristers across the country to compose a new anthem for their Cathedral or Chapel Choir! 🎶

Both Izzy and Thomas set the words 'Songs of praise the angels sang', which was specified by the CSA as the set text. Izzy's piece is for two-part upper voices; Thomas' piece is for double choir unaccompanied.

Thomas said: "I am very proud to have been Highly Commended. I have entered this competition several times, and it feels great to be recognised in this way."

Izzy's and Thomas' achievements showcase the unrivalled musical pathway offered by King's and the Cathedral: from Chorister to Organ Scholar, and from first theory lessons to accomplished composition.

We are so proud of them both, and we look forward to hearing their pieces played in Cathedral Services soon! 👏🏽

We are thrilled and proud to announce that Izzy in Year 6 has won the junior division of the The Choir Schools Association’s composition competition! The set words were two verses of “Songs of praise the angels sang” and Izzy’s anthem is for two part upper voices.

We’ve also just learned that our Sixth Form Organ Scholar, Thomas, has been highly commended in the senior division of the competition—more on this to come soon.

Congratulations to both of them!

This group of children sang Evensong entirely by themselves today: they gave themselves notes; they brought themselves in; they sat and stood together; they began and finished singing at the same time; all without adult help. His cross stands empty in a world grown silent…
