So this is an interesting plant. At first it looks like a carnivorous pitcher, but is in fact a flower of the Dutchman's Pipe Vine (Aristolochia triangularis). It's native to South America but is often kept in butterfly houses around the world as an important host plant for several swallowtail and cattleheart species. I took the reference photo in 2021 at Dartmoor Otter & Butterfly Sanctuary.

Thank you for all the votes on my FB as to which spood from my old collection to paint first.
So a little background: this greenbottle blue tarantula (Chromatopelma cyaneopubescens) was one of the earliest in my collection. I got him over a decade ago, as a spiderling, from my local exotics pet store (shout out to Dave at Wrigglies wooo!)
I named him Goatley. He was a beautiful little nutter that went nuts for food and fought me over decor.
The photo reference was taken not long before his final moult, when he matured and went off to a friend Mark, to try and make some spider babies with his females.
And here he is, now immortalised in acrylic 😁
Frame is on the way

Please help me pick πŸ˜…
I've been wanting to go through my photos and pick a spider from my old collection to paint for quite a while. I've shortlisted these 4 favourites:
πŸ‘ Xenesthis immanis (Columbian lesser black)
❀️ Lasiodorides polycuspulata (Peruvian blonde)
😯 Psalmopoeus langenbucheri (Venezuelan chevron)
πŸ˜† Chromatopelma cyaneopubescens (greenbottle blue)

Despite how alien they look, I find mantids one of the easier invertebrates to anthropomorphise, due to those pseudopupils. When looking at these I feel like I've clearly said something to p**s off Queen Conehead (Empusa pennata) and her 2 European mantis maids (Mantis religiosa) are like 😬😬.
It has been a slow process with this one, because I mostly feel like a giant sickly mess of late. I still need to do the canvas edges, sign, varnish, and come up with a name (any ideas appreciated).

Music to match my ever stretching shirt πŸ˜‰

I'd just like to do a little appreciation post for my favourite macro photographer, Nik
His work has been the inspiration for quite a number of my paintings. If you like your bugs I suggest you check out his IG.
