Anyone who had a heart will struggle to walk on by when a special evening of music celebrating the songwriting genius of Burt Bacharach takes place on Saturday 17 February 2024 at The Maltings, Ely, starting at 7:30pm.
The concert, which will mark a year since the musician’s death, will be a celebration of Bacharach’s partnership with lyricist Hal David.
The Nigel Bennett Orchestra will take the audience on a journey through the outstanding songbook of the pair, which added a cool and jazzy flair to the music of the 60s and 70s with tunes made famous by Dionne Warwick, Dusty Springfield, Sandy Shaw, Aretha Franklin, Gene Pitney, and the Walker Brothers, to name just a few.
The group is a new musical project lead by local composer and trumpet player Nigel Bennett, who has pulled together some of the best musicians in East Anglia especially for this concert.
Burt Bacharach’s music is not just beautiful to listen to, it’s a real treat to play. He didn’t stick to the emerging conventions of what pop music should sound like, and there really hasn’t been a songwriter before or since who managed to turn such odd chords and time signatures into radio-friendly music.
Also, as the concert is over Valentines weekend, we get to hear some of the gorgeous lyrics of Hal David, who certainly knew how to capture romance in his words.
The concert will feature Chloe Grimes, Kerry Maltby and Tom Huttlestone on vocals.
The Nigel Bennett Orchestra is being supported in the first half by ‘Shakey Breaks The Ice’, a jazz trio featuring Trevor Barlow (clarinet and saxophone), Bert Stilly (accordion), and Hugh Boyde (guitar). They will be playing an eclectic mix of jazz, cafe, gypsy and klezmer.
