The Next Stage The Next Stage gives public performance experience to musicians and groups

Unfortunately, due to very poor advance ticket sales, the venue has decided to cancel the Burt Bacharach concert at Epic Studios, Norwich on 8 September 2024.
I am very disappointed, as I'm sure you are. Once I know when and where we will be staging this concert again, I will let you know.

Anyone who had a heart will struggle to walk on by when a special evening of music celebrating the songwriting genius of Burt Bacharach takes place on Saturday 17 February 2024 at The Maltings, Ely, starting at 7:30pm.

The concert, which will mark a year since the musician’s death, will be a celebration of Bacharach’s partnership with lyricist Hal David.

The Nigel Bennett Orchestra will take the audience on a journey through the outstanding songbook of the pair, which added a cool and jazzy flair to the music of the 60s and 70s with tunes made famous by Dionne Warwick, Dusty Springfield, Sandy Shaw, Aretha Franklin, Gene Pitney, and the Walker Brothers, to name just a few.

The group is a new musical project lead by local composer and trumpet player Nigel Bennett, who has pulled together some of the best musicians in East Anglia especially for this concert.

Burt Bacharach’s music is not just beautiful to listen to, it’s a real treat to play. He didn’t stick to the emerging conventions of what pop music should sound like, and there really hasn’t been a songwriter before or since who managed to turn such odd chords and time signatures into radio-friendly music.

Also, as the concert is over Valentines weekend, we get to hear some of the gorgeous lyrics of Hal David, who certainly knew how to capture romance in his words.

The concert will feature Chloe Grimes, Kerry Maltby and Tom Huttlestone on vocals.

The Nigel Bennett Orchestra is being supported in the first half by ‘Shakey Breaks The Ice’, a jazz trio featuring Trevor Barlow (clarinet and saxophone), Bert Stilly (accordion), and Hugh Boyde (guitar). They will be playing an eclectic mix of jazz, cafe, gypsy and klezmer.

Tickets are £16 +booking fee, and are only available at:

The first Next Stage gig held on Saturday 10 June 2023 at St Andrews Street Baptist Church in Cambridge was a huge success. I'd like to thank the two bands who performed that evening - 440.JAZZ and the Cambridge Groove Orchestra - for a fabulous evening of music ranging from after dinner jazz to full throttle big band swing. The church is still reverberating from the drum break in 'Sing, Sing, Sing' !!
I'd also like to thank the 100+ audience for coming along to support these two local bands. It was a real boost to the bands have such an appreciative audience.
Keep your eyes and ears open for details of the next concert in the Next Stage concert series.

Formed in 2017, the Cambridge Grove Orchestra (CGO) is a full Big Band line-up, playing a wide range of music from the swing and dance band eras of the 1940s and 50s through to more modern and original arrangements of well-known numbers.

The general opinion was that 'JFL Nebula Nights' was a pretty awful name, sounding a bit like a dodgy nightclub where people like me might hang out! So the name has changed to 'The Next Stage' which describes far more aptly what I'm doing now, which is helping aspiring jazz acts, singer/songwriters and other music performers to get to the next stage in their careers.

Watch this space for further details! Or check out the website:

The Next Stage is an event to encourage and help new performers to get to the next stage on their music career. We are looking to give singer-songwriters, jazz groups and singers, and other music ensembles the chance to perform in totally safe performance venues in their locality and surrounding are...
