🦁🐟 Meet our Red Lionfish
Donning striking stripes, fan-like fins and impressive spines, they are certainly hard to miss!
However, there is so much more to these little fishonistas than their looks.
🌊 Native to the Indo-Pacific region, Red Lionfish are skilled ambush predators, utilising their unique fins to corner smaller fish before striking.
Those spines aren’t just for show either! They contain venom that helps protect Lionfish from predators.
🌍 They have also become a conservation concern in parts of the Atlantic and Caribbean, where they are an invasive species. There are few natural predators in these new environments, so populations can grow out of hand, putting pressure on native marine life.
It’s important to learn about species like Red Lionfish as it helps us understand how connected our world’s oceans are and why protect them matters. 💙
Next time you see one at the aquarium, take a look closer… there is more to them than meets the eye!
