Let’s design a Baba Yaga together

Baba Yaga is a Slavic folk tale of a witch. Some say she eats kids others she is a helpful witch. She is depicted as having a hut with chicken legs.

When an idea pops into my head I just got to get it down and I’m not far from my sketchbook. This is where I will stretch it out maybe a few times to see how it looks.

I take a photo of my sketch and upload it to procreate where I can develop the idea further.

This is the stage where I flesh out the idea to have a clearer path of where the design is heading. By looking at more images and knowing the folk tale I can add more details.

Like Slavic hair style or patterns or even just colours. I look at other artists to see why they done certain things. And I also look back at my own work to see what I liked and want to take forward in my new work.

Perspective is annoying to figure so I use a base. Yes the base is from a building games. Well it’s easier than learning a 3D modelling software and it works for me.

Once my final sketch is done I like to print it off and check it out on placements, size and space to age. It’s nice to go back to having it physically in front of you to see it in context again.

Stencil/lineart is done I try my best to get it as close to the needles size I will use but sometimes the stencil printer doesn’t pick up fine lines so I do make them slightly thicker.

Then it’s on to rendering the design. I like doing this to show what I would like the final tattoo to be like, it’s nice to show clients. I know if it’s an orange it’s going to be orange colours I use but it’s fun.
