Thanks to everyone who came to our events on Saturday for International Sculpture Day and tied into both our participation in Workshops Week with Scotland’s Workshops and RSA200 with the Royal Scottish Academy of Art and Architecture. Artist tours of exhibitions and studios done by David Lemm and by Libby Entwistle and Eilidh McKeown; architect’s tour by Charlie Hussey RSA; technicians tour done by Uist Corrigan and Gabriele Jogelaite. David Lemm’s exhibition is part of our Hawthornvale Mentorship Scheme supported by the Fenton Arts Trust and the show by Libby Entwistle and Eilidh McKeown comes out of our Graduate Awardee programme in collaboration with Edinburgh College of Art. Thanks goes to all of the audiences who came along and asked questions and enjoyed the day as well as to all of the team who made it happen. Images show audience members in David Lemm’s studio looking over research materials; audience members standing in the sunny courtyard next to some sculpture materials; Eilidh McKeown talking about her work which is a purple banner with a knitted scarf with the words God Save The Kin written into it; Libby Entwistle standing within her archway sculpture next to Fish Lips a suspended ceramic sculpture of a fish mask; staff members talking to the audience in the Casting Workshop; some mouldmaking books and materials laid out in our Plaster Workshop for the tour and demonstration.

ESW is excited to present Come Hell or High Water, an exhibition of finished and work in progress pieces by Libby Entwistle and Eilidh McKeown our ECA/ESW Graduate Awardees, who have been working in our studios between February and April 2026. The exhibition title, Come Hell or High Water, is itself an idiom, a phrase so deeply rooted and culturally specific that its origins have worn away, leaving only the determination behind. To proceed as an artist in the current climate requires something of that dogged spirit. Both artists are drawn to the way idioms, like beliefs, are picked up and carried through history, evolving from proverbs and warnings into the texture of everyday speech. To the point of being part of the landscape of things.

Central to both practices is a question about collective identity: what informs the work we make, and where does that formation begin? What if our earliest exposure to creativity was not abstract painting or marble sculpture, but trophies set in velvet boxes, or pages printed from the internet to colour in and handmade sculptures of a relative known for being difficult? These family stories, inherited habits and surrounding environments embed themselves in how we understand the world.
