This pool was such an unexpected pleasure to swim in. I’d like to say I knew all about it beforehand, but to be honest I’d not even planned to go to Split on this trip. So when I arrived on the train from Zagreb, I Googled local public pools and found Bazeni Poljud.

The outdoor and indoor pools are right next to Poljud City football stadium, part of a complex designed by Boris Magaš for the 1979 Mediterranean Games, and now a protected cultural monument in Croatia. The pool roof was designed to look like a wave, and the whole site sits really beautifully in the landscape.

It was almost empty when I was there. Unfortunately, the outdoor pool was closed, soon to be renovated, along with the stadium. But the indoor swimming hall has huge windows and the views while you’re swimming are amazing - in fact I would say they just about rival those of the Aqualibrium in Campbeltown, if you can believe it.

Amalienbad, Vienna

I spent a lovely morning here last weekend, had a swim in the pool and spent some time in the very beautiful sauna complex.

It’s an incredible baths, built as part of the ‘Rotes Wien / Red Vienna’ construction during the 1920s, which aimed to improve the quality of life for workers through social housing schemes and amenities.

I’d read reviews of this place online saying everyone was rude and grumpy, but I only got shouted at once (for opening a sauna door at the wrong time, I think), and everyone else was very helpful. It was ladies only morning in the sauna, which I would recommend for any women who, like me, grew up with a very non-Germanic attitude to nudity :)

Everything is so orderly in Vienna, but like most pools I’ve been to in German-speaking cities, the lane system was absolutely out of control.

Last two photos taken from Wiener Bäder with no sign of a photographer credit, apologies, but I’m not the kind of entitled idiot who takes photos in a sauna (I’m the kind of entitled idiot who takes photos from the council website), and I think the ladies of Amalienbad would not have put a stop to that anyway :)

I went for a swim here the other night, at the beautiful Bains de Saint-Josse in the north of Brussels (third photo robbed off the Brussels council website, sorry).

It took quite a lot of tenacity as the receptionist wasn’t thrilled I didn’t have very much French swimming vocab, or indeed any cash. But I got there in the end and it was a lovely way to spend a couple of hours.

I’d planned to go for more swims while I was in Brussels at the start of my train trip across Europe - they have some really interesting historic pools - but the day I left Edinburgh I woke up with a grotty cold, and it hung around for a few days. So I picked the pool at the top of my list and went on my last night.

I love going for a swim when I’m in a new city. You visit areas you might not have gone to otherwise, and come across people you probably wouldn’t as a tourist.

I did also do lots of other things in Brussels - I saw some very good art and some I didn’t much care for, and drank some very nice beer - thanks mainly to recommendations by and (in that order).

I’ve been meaning for months to do a bit more writing about some of the pools I’m looking at as part of my current studio work. A 15-hour night train to Vienna was the ideal opportunity, so hold on to your silicon hats 😎

Bon Accord Baths 🤿💦

I spent a fascinating few days touring some swimming spots in the northeast of Scotland recently as part of my project Immersive, and was lucky to get a tour of the amazing Bon Accord baths in Aberdeen city centre.

It’s an incredible Art Deco building, and inside is a truly grand space - my photos really don’t touch the size or scale of it. Opened during the Second World War, it was a project of hope and ambition for Aberdeen and its community - but the council closed it in 2008 for financial reasons and it’s since fallen into disrepair. There is now an active campaign to reopen it, run by some very hardworking volunteers at .

I’d be very interested to hear from anyone who remembers the pool when it was open 👋 and in the meantime watch this space for some new work about it 😎

It’s the last weekend to catch the Annual Exhibition at the !

The show is open every day until this Wednesday, after which I’ll be painting over my work. There’s so much to see in the exhibition, which was a huge amount of work for the volunteers at the SSA, so do get along before Wednesday if you’d like to see it 😊

It was also fun to get a name check in The Scotsman’s four-star review today by Duncan Macmillan. I’m choosing to take his words that my wall painting commands the main room as a compliment, even though a person who commands the room sounds like someone I would cross the street to avoid.

Anyway, thank you for the shout-out! And if you do get along to see it, please do let me know what you think!

Some lovely installation shots of my wall painting in the Annual Exhibition at the by . Thank you Julie!

This was such a pleasure to paint, and it was brilliant to get to do it on to the walls of the magnificent RSA building in Edinburgh at the start of its bicentenary year.

Well done again to the SSA for pulling off the exhibition. It runs until February 4th - details below!

It was a total privilege to be let loose on the walls of the building to create this mega wall painting for the 127th Annual Exhibition, which opens today.

Thanks so much to the SSA for selecting this work, and for putting their trust in me. Making work like this is always a bit nerve-wracking, but it was a really fun and positive way to start 2026, spending last week working in the gallery with the SSA team and fellow artists.

Thanks not just to the selection committee, but also the SSA Council, Presidents, Vice-Presidents, administrators and volunteers in the gallery last week for support, encouragement, ladder holding, general patience and humour, all while they were curating and hanging a show with hundreds of artworks.

And for a lovely opening yesterday! I was delighted to provide the backdrop to the Presidents’ and Vice-Presidents’ addresses 🥂

I am so chuffed to have been awarded funding to develop my project ‘Immersive’, looking at swimming pools as social spaces. 🤿🥳

Over the next 18 months I’ll be visiting, researching, and making work about pools around Scotland, within a wider international context. I’ll also be holding collaborative workshops and events, and creating site-specific work.

When I first had the idea for this project, on a residency with back in 2022, I thought it was quite a niche interest – but I’ve since discovered I’m part of a very welcoming world of researchers, historians, writers, artists, campaigners, swimmers and others with an interest in this subject.

I’d love to connect with anyone who has an interest in the history, design, architecture or social context of swimming pools - or anyone with a more general interest in pools and swimming.

So please do DM me if that’s you. I would love to hear from you! 😊

A massive thank you to and for supporting my funding application, and to the and for providing the initial platform for my project at the Royal Commonwealth Pool in Edinburgh earlier this year 🙏
