It's Dementia Awareness Week (1–8 June), and we're celebrating the creativity, connection, and community at the heart of our dementia-friendly programme at NEA!

This year's campaign, led by Alzheimer Scotland, is themed around 'Better care, full stop' reminding how vital consistent, community-based support is for people living with dementia and those who care for them. By working in partnership with local people, and local groups and organisations, we're able to create welcoming activities that truly support our community and make a positive difference to people's lives.

From our Monday's Sunshine Social Club (supported by Meeting Centres Scotland) and Wednesday's intergenerational music and movement group with the Forget Me Notes Project to our Dementia-Friendly Film Club, we believe that these are so much more than activities, but spaces that create belonging and understanding. One of our participants described NEA as 'a second home for us', and that means everything to us.

Join us for the upcoming Dementia-Friendly Film Club screening of Summer Holiday on Thursday 25 June at 1.30pm (you can expect catchy 60s tunes, light-hearted charm, and a warm, welcoming atmosphere with refreshments and a short interval)

To find out more about our dementia-friendly programme, visit: https://northedinburgharts.co.uk/dementia-awareness-week-at-nea/

The beautiful collages you can see here are from a recent scrapbook workshop at Sunshine Social Club, led by Tortoise in a Nutshell. It was a joyful, creative session and we love how it came together, full of colour, personality, and shared stories.

Next Wednesday 10 June, Smart Play Network are bringing their Fire Play training session right here to the NEA Community Garden.

Fire has been a focal point for humans forever for warmth, cooking, storytelling, and simply bringing people together. Building a small campfire or cooking over a fire is a great outdoor activity to do with children as long as it's done safely.

This half-day course covers:
- The benefits of fire play
- How to light a fire safely
- Safety essentials
- Fire play skills, including cooking over fire

You'll come away feeling confident and inspired to bring fire play into your own setting.

Find out more about this training opportunity here: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/fire-skills-training-edinburgh-10-june-2026-tickets-1982342198880

Organised by Smart Play Network, Scotland’s leading charity supporting play services, play providers, and community play initiatives for children.

We strive to be an organisation that is open and welcoming and where different voices can flourish. We are keen to recruit someone who feels their voice is under-represented in the sector and have a commitment to accessibility and equality. We would welcome and encourage applications from individuals living and/or working in the areas of North Edinburgh neighbouring NEA. We recognise that the written format is not always the most accessible way to apply, so if there are any specific access requirements you need to apply for and/or to fulfil the position, please let us know and we will arrange that with you.

Last week we were thrilled to launch Pop! Dance Temp Move exhibition, born out of illustrator Katie Quinn's artist residency here at NEA to explore and respond to early electronic music, and the technology that was originally created, developed and used to make electronic sounds.

Katie collaborated with children from St. David's RC Primary School in Muirhouse and National Museums Scotland. P4 class visited the NMS Collection Centre in Granton in early 2026 to explore the Science and Technology collection, researching objects connected to how we have listened to and enjoyed recorded music over the last 150 years. NMS curatorial and community engagement staff worked with the children to access and explore this fascinating collection.

In creative workshops with Katie, the children made beautiful drawings, collages and sculptures in response to all their research. They also worked with composer and sound artist Deborah Shaw (Aurora Engine) to experiment with making and recording their own digital and analogue sounds, from which an original composition has been created. And yes, you get to listen to it on a tape deck!

Pop! Dance Tempo Move is on display at North Edinburgh Arts until 5 June 2026 - go and see it if you get the chance!

As many of you will know we now have an Art For Grown Ups Residency Studio at North Edinburgh Arts
Up on the top floor of NEA - three AFGU members have spent 6 months sharing a studio space - which resulted in an exhibition on the mezzanine at NEA in April.

This project has been a long time in the making - and the group visited multiple community and open access studio spaces to consider what we wanted to set up for local creatives here at NEA..

What the first AFGU resident artists said:

"This was an amazing experience that allowed me the space to practice and try new things. I also really enjoyed collaborating with the other residents and discussing where we were with our projects." Yasmin

"I would just never have done this [new] artwork without the residency. .. Allowing myself to make mistakes...It has been a space to express feelings not otherwise expressed." Kirsty

"I was able to try unexpected materials, to follow the feeling- having the space and freedom to enjoy making. I enjoyed people coming up to see what we were up to." Kevin
