Stills is a registered charity and a centre for photography based in the heart of Edinburgh. Stills is a centre for photography based in the heart of Edinburgh.

We offer exhibitions and production facilities as well as a range of engagement opportunities for anyone to discover, enjoy and understand photography. Stills was established in 1977. Since that time it has become a champion for the important and powerful role that the medium of photography plays in the world today.

Upcoming Course… Introduction to Large Format Photography 📸

📆 Sunday 29 November, 11am - 5pm

Throughout this course, you’ll develop an understanding of the technical operation of a 5x4” large-format camera, from loading the dark slides to exploring the manipulation of camera movements.

Through discussions, practical tasks and the analysis of the resulting images, you’ll discover the benefits of a slow, considered photographic process through large format photography.

Stills School Spotlight… Neve Beattie 🔦

This week, we’re spotlighting one of our Stills School alumni, Neve Beattie. We love the tones in this landscape, titled The Mill, which forms part of Neve’s ongoing series Forsaken (2026). This print was made using liquid light in the Stills darkrooms during Stills School: Academy. 🎞️

Stills School is an alternative photography school for 16-25 year olds. Delivered in two distinct stages, it allows young people to develop their photography skills at a pace and level that suits them. ✏️

Curator & Artist Tour: Jillian Edelstein

This Friday, 23 October we’re welcoming Jillian Edelstein and back to Stills for a special curation event, marking the end of Jillian Edelstein ‘Among People’.

This will be your final opportunity to gain exclusive insight into the exhibition as Jillian and Tracy guide you through the stories behind the work and the curatorial process that shaped ‘Among People’.

This will be your final opportunity to experience the exhibition through the perspectives of both the artist and the curator.

Unfortunately, tickets for this event are now sold out. However, you can join our waitlist in case of cancellations.

There’s still time to see ‘Among People’ as we’ve extended the exhibition until 31 October 2026.

Analogue Possibilities
📆 20 October - 10 November, Tuesday evenings 6-9pm

Throughout this course, you will investigate the endless possibilities of analogue photography. We will produce photographs that unveil hidden worlds through film pushing and pulling techniques, Sabattier printing, photograms, lith printing and more.

We have another Intro to Black & White weekend coming up! Discover the magic of black and white photography and learn some of the secrets the masters use to create stunning photographs.

We’re excited to be extending this exhibition for an extra week! ‘Among People’ will now show until Saturday 31 October, giving you a little more time to experience this wonderful body of work. Make sure you don’t miss out!

‘Affinities’ is one of several bodies of work in ‘Among People’. This ongoing series explores the relationships that shape our lives. Beginning in the early 1990’s, the project emerged from a personal moment for Edelstein, as she became increasingly aware of the partnerships and friendships around her.

The series began with a simple proposition. Edestein invited people to choose someone they had met through work and with whom they had continued to share an important connection. In the 1990’s alone, she photographed more than 100 pairs. In recent years, she has returned to many of those relationships, whilst also adding new ones.

This project consists of many portraits that explore evolving connections spanning more than three decades.

You can see more from ‘Affinities’ and many other projects by Jillian Edelstein in ‘Among People’, which closes in just a few weeks on 31 October.

Upcoming… Documentary Photography: From Seed to Sapling 🎞️

📆 07 & 14 November 2026 | 11am - 5pm

There are just a couple of spaces left on our upcoming documentary photography course, ‘From Seed to Sapling’. During this course, you will learn how to tell compelling stories through photographs and gain the tools for conceiving and crafting your own projects.

This course covers a broad range of themes, including subject interaction, ethical considerations, natural light usage and composition. You’ll pick up pointers on how to find ideas, develop your vision and self-edit.

This course is perfect for those with some photographic experience who want to take their photographic practice to a documentary level.

Production Facility User Spotlight 🔦 Sam McArdle 𝚂𝙰𝙼 - 𝚂𝚃𝙾𝙿𝙿𝙰𝙶𝙴 𝚃𝙸𝙼𝙴 𝚆𝙸𝙽𝙽𝙴𝚁

We’re spotlighting Facilities User, Sam McArdle 𝚂𝙰𝙼 - 𝚂𝚃𝙾𝙿𝙿𝙰𝙶𝙴 𝚃𝙸𝙼𝙴 𝚆𝙸𝙽𝙽𝙴𝚁 and his striking cyanotype prints, made in the Stills Darkroom from 35mm negatives. 🎞️

Sam’s work explores football culture, both on and off the pitch, using the distinctive deep blue tones of the cyanotype process to document communities, characters and fan culture.

🖌️Cyanotype printing is one of the oldest photographic processes, dating back to the 19th century. It involves laying an object onto chemically treated paper before exposing it to a light source. For this process, Sam has used 35mm negatives to create these striking images. A selection of Sam’s handmade prints are available to buy via his website.

VOLUNTEER WITH US! 📸

We’re excited to announce that applications are now open for volunteers to join us for our upcoming exhibition, beginning 19 November.

Volunteering at Stills is a great opportunity to gain firsthand experience in a gallery environment, meet new people and get involved behind the scenes of our exhibitions.

We’re looking for Exhibition Invigilators to help welcome and engage with visitors, supervise the exhibition, answer questions and gather visitor feedback.

Whether you’re studying the arts, building experience in the creative sector, or simply have a passion for photography, we’d love to hear from you! You’ll have the chance to share your knowledge and enthusiasm with our visitors, while getting early access to the exhibition and exclusive exhibition walk-throughs.
