Our Linen Stories celebrate the versatility of linen and flax fibre in the context of our shared transnational heritage, and platforms contemporary design, material innovation and sustainable product development. We present a rolling series of exhibitions, talks, walks and workshops, presenting contemporary designers from Scotland, and beyond, with a focus on sustainability and well-being. In Sept

ember 2021, we presented Scotland’s first Flax and Linen Festival, in collaboration with Scottish Civic Trust and the communities of Fife. Participatory research for Our Linen Stories began in May 2018 and continue across Scotland and internationally, online and on the ground.

Mapping a Welcome to Fife
Our Linen Stories currently on display in the Community Gallery of Dunfermline Carnegie Library & Galleries includes an opening section that explores the intimate relationship between mapping and linen.

Check out linen backing on Bartholomew's, the wonderful Fife Museums OnFife designed by Mint Modern Creative and the satellite mosaic map, reminding us that we all share the same seas...

Who doesn't love a map?
We're grateful to Chris Fleet and team at the National Library of Scotland for their support over the last 10 years including with this years 1856 OS Map of Dunfermline showing just how much tge town was all about flax fibre and linen

For FlaxFest24, we're calling on visitors to help us continue our Citizen Mapping project...Place names in Fife relating to linen? Then, now and next... in Dunfermline alone there are examples of all three.

to the Kingdom of Fife via big skies and bridges every day this month, to forward our FlaxFest24 programme.

As a medical student in late 1980s to Mikemark Hospital and as physician training in the early 1990s at Queen Margarets, I enjoyed a daily commute across the Forth Road Bridge.

Today, for events with Our Linen Stories in the last 6 years, I've had many Journeys in Design with rhe Queensferry Crossing.

Forever in awe of these engineering masterworks, I was happy to have met some of the great team from American Bridges during construction of the new bridge.

They were particularly proud to build in this location in view of the Forth Rail Bridge, and told me that Bridge builders everywhere refer to that pioneering structure simply as 'THE bridge'.

A Sunday Special
We're in Ceres today on this latest stage of our Linen Pilgrimage through Fife.

No registration required at the Fife Folk Museum, a home for linen culture all year round, and currently showing a Local Linens exhibition.

Our Linen Pilgrims are also invited to enjoy a walk to nearby Birch Tree Studio.

Michael Wolchover and Kate Downie will be on hand to offer insights into their creative practice, and their experience of growing and using flax and Fife linen.

Our Linen Stories

Journeys in Design is excited to introduce this inaugural Material World production.

Our Linen Stories Exhibition features Contemporary Designers and tales of heritage, production, material innovation and sustainability with items on show ranging from new interiors textiles to a flax chair and pair of skis.

In 2018 the exhibition toured to Leith (May) Selkirk (July) Kirkcaldy (September) Lisburn (October) and Newtonmore (October), exploring contemporary responses to our linen heritage and gathering your linen stories en route.

This year we revisit with Pop Exhibitions and Events through May and June before gathering all Our Linen Stories together in Edinburgh in September.
