The Lonely City by Olivia Laing and narrated by Tilda Swinton is out today on Audible.

It was another truly amazing experience working with Tilda Swinton, this time on her very first audiobook which I directed and produced here at Offbeat for Canongate Books. It was first published in 2016 by Canongate in the UK and Picador in the US. Like Olivia’s previous works, The Lonely City blends research, biography and memoir.

I also had the pleasure of producing the epilogue by the author Olivia Laing for this new edition of the audiobook.

The majority of the research for the book took place when she was living alone in New York City, after having been abruptly left by a partner. Their reflections on the isolation they felt during this time make their way into the book, which studies the relationship between loneliness and art and includes stories about Edward Hopper, Henry Darger, Klaus Nomi and Andy Warhol.

It was a huge honour to be chosen to produce this important work. Tilda did a fantastic job of the narration we were very pleased when the CEO of Canongate, Jamie Byng who attended the final day of recording said “Watching Iain & Tilda working on The Lonely City was a masterclass in audiobook production, and the resulting recording is a masterpiece”.

Music to my ears!!

Gaelic Poet Peter Mackay is the Scots Makar, or national poet.
We were extremely pleased to have the opportunity to produce two audiobooks in both Gaelic and English, Galore and Nadar De for release by Acair Books in Stornoway in the Isle of Lewis, specialising in bilingual, English, and Scottish Gaelic literature.

The Makar takes a leadership role in promoting poetry in Scotland and internationally, as well as producing work relating to significant national events.

Not being a Gaelic speaker, recording over 100 poems in both English and Gaelic was challenging when it came to dropping in over mistakes but Peter steered the recording along the right lines and somehow we delivered all the poems with no mistakes.

Dr Mackay was appointed by the First Minister for a three-year term on the recommendation of a panel representing Scotland’s literary sector. He is the fifth person to hold the role since it was established by the Scottish Parliament in 2004, following in the footsteps of Kathleen Jamie, Jackie Kay, Liz Lochhead, and Edwin Morgan.

We have had the pleasure of recording both Jackie Kay and Liz Lochhead here at Offbeat in the past so this is the third Makar we have recorded at the studio

Travelcee Netherlands Recording Studio Workshop.

Very enjoyable session hosting a recording studio workshop with 20 Dutch students. We covered our studio history and journey from early analogue recording technology through to the present day.

I also demonstrated ADR (Automated Dialogue Replacement) dubbing techniques and a couple of students had a go at syncing voice to picture which provided some light relief.

We also had a go at recording a segment of an audiobook and the day finished with a Q&A session

This is our fourth group workshop at the studio having hosted 60 US students for the overseas organisation CIEE over two years, as well as 30 Gefion Gymnasium students from Denmark.

The Optimised Human a Beginners Guide to Biohacking

By Olli Sovijarvi, Teemu Arina and Jaako Halmetoja was the 120th Audiobook we’ve recorded at Offbeat. Brilliantly narrated by Steve Worsley, Ii was produced and directed by Iain McKinna for Quercas Books - A division of Hachette Publishing

The Optimized Human, written by the Finnish team who also wrote The Biohackers Handbook Series, harnesses the most cutting-edge information on science, diet and technology and turns them into a practical, manageable and customisable plan that’s aimed to revolutionise every area of your wellbeing.

It’s pitched as the missing manual of the human body, and an essential addition to the library, work desk, kitchen, gym, suitcase or bedroom of anyone who wants to get the best out of their life.

Teviot university re-opens with Audio Guide produced at Offbeat

Following a £10 Million renovation Teviot University has re-opened this month. It’s been closed since September 2023 for major works on the building

Offbeat produced an audio guide of the building which is now open to visitors.

Working with Sarah Stirton-Andrews we worked with Voice artists provided for the project which was produced over a few weeks in January and February this year. It involved music and narration which we put together for the audio tour.

The Paradoxical Life
From Anxiety to Bliss

Is an incredible interpretation of The Bhagadavgita by Gordon Collins and beautifully narrated by his brother Raymond Collins.

We had the pleasure of producing and directing the audiobook at our Edinburgh recording studio on the Royal Mile, specialising in audiobook production for publishers and authors.

The Bhagavad Gita is a 700-verse Hindu scripture from the Mahabharata detailing a dialogue between Prince Arjuna and Lord Krishna on the battlefield of Kurukshetra.

Facing a moral crisis, Arjuna learns from Krishna about duty (dharma), selfless action (karma yoga), devotion (bhakti), and the immortality of the soul, guiding him toward spiritual wisdom.

Author Gordon Collins sets out to interpret this ancient book in a way that offers inspirational explanations which are deeply moving and highly instructional.
