Have you seen the Push the Boat Out Festival is coming back to Summerhall next weekend (4th to the 6th November). A poetry festival with the spoken word unfurling in all its fabulous forms.

Some real favourites in there too: Memoirs of the Moment with our Michael Pedersen & Seán Hewitt; a book launch for the lush Leyla Josephine; the ace Janette Ayachi is on multi performer bill alongside Belle and Sebastian's Stuart Murdoch; there's a mythical beasts event with Solareye, Hollie Poetry & others; The Honey Farm are playing; Hannah Lavery and our Kat Gollock are doing a show together, and Hannah has yin with Michael Mullen too. The list canters on with unrelenting lushness.

Check it all out here: https://pushtheboatout.org/Programme/

Here is a stunning film made by the musical maestro Lomond Campbell, featuring vocals from our Michael Pedersen — with words drawn from his new book BOY FRIENDS (just published by Faber Books). If you’ve yet not got a copy of the book, we implore you to rectify that pronto. Did we mention it went straight into the Official Indie Top non-fiction Bestsellers at #4? 💜💜💜

All of Edinburgh’s lush indies are well-stocked: The Portobello Bookshop, Lighthouse - Edinburgh's Radical Bookshop, Golden Hare Books, Topping & Company Booksellers of Edinburgh; also our chums monorail music in Glasgow; The Highland Bookshop, Fort William; Forum Books in the North East of England & heaps more.

This film was made by Lomond during the Neu Reekie residency at The Pier Arts Centre in Orkney and features disparate lines from the book that encapsulate the character of the sea.

'I think of you – just your face as it comes – when my skin tautens plunging into the sea.' Author and poet, Michael Pedersen reads from his book, Boy Friend...

ONE FOR THE ROAD, OUR FRIENDS:

We have some news. Big news. Neu! Reekie! will be putting on just one more show in 2022—in fact, we’re hitting the pause button. This will be happening on Sunday 14th August. It’s called Neu Reekie's One For The Road and will be hosted at the lush (family run) Bellfield Brewery in Edinburgh.

It’s going to be a special evening and maybe a wee bit celebratory/emotional for all of us. We really hope loads of our regulars, and the many friends we’ve made over the years, will come to this last show for the foreseeable. It will absolutely teeming with some of our favourite writers / artists / humans.

After this August extravaganza, Neu! Reekie! will be taking an extended break, going into hibernation for a while, allowing all four of us time to pursue other projects, as well as reflect on what we’ve achieved over the last 12 years.

This long-running project has changed our lives immeasurably and allowed us the privilege of meeting and getting to know so many of you, as well as working with, and championing, some of the most incredible performers, writers, artists, DJs, film-makers and musicians in the land.

Gratitude and pride don’t quite cut the mustard when it comes to expressing our thanks, but we’ll try and find the words when the night draws in.

We’re hugely grateful to our sponsors over the years: Creative Scotland, Dewar’s Whisky, Edinburgh Beer Factory, Dreamtower, Bellfield Brewery & more.

We pay homage, and massive thanks, to our amazing audiences, some of whom have been coming to Neu! Reekie! since we first showed up in January 2011.

Because of your support we’ve been able to produce hundreds of shows, birthed a micro publishing house and record label, and taken our unique events all over the world.

There’s so much more to be said on this, perhaps even in book form, but for now we send love and we hope to see you on Sunday 14th August.

This sublime event features (drum roll…): Liz Lochhead, Hollie Poetry, Darren McGarvey, Salena Godden, Hannah Lavery, Tam Dean Burn, Davy Henderson, The Honey Farm, Solareye, Callum Easter & more TBA. There will also be key contributions from all our team/family: Michael Pedersen, Kevin Williamson, Kat Gollock, and Davie Miller.

AND your ticket includes a complimentary can of bespoke Neu! Reekie! beer brewed just for the occasion—a true collector’s item.

What say you lovelies—one more for the road?

Love 💕 Michael, Kevin, Kat, Davie / Team Neu! Reekie! x

We are super excited to have Sunnah Khan making her debut appearance with us at Neu Reekie this Friday as part of Neu! Reekie! Voices. Sunnah was one of our Highly Commended in the Voices Commissions. She's part of the incredible collective '4 Brown Girls Who Write' who've published with our friends Rough Trade Books. Sunnah's stunning pamphlet (which gives voice to the ghosts of things unsaid) bears the banner 'I Don’t Know How to Forgive You When You Make No Apology For This Haunting'. Here's a piece on them in Vogue no less.
