Our new garden-themed exhibition features work from a number of artists, including Jacqueline Orr RSW RGI PAI.

Jacqueline shared the sketches that inspired some of her paintings from the show, and told us what gardens mean to her:

“From my experience of living in France and Kintyre, both normally blessed with fine weather during the summer months, I view a garden as another room in the home. Indeed we virtually lived in the garden during the summer months. It is often a place of sanctuary, tranquility, beauty and space, as well as a place to enjoy the company of family and friends. It is also a place to connect with nature and its inhabitants; from ducks, geese, wild boar, stags(!), frogs, birds and an abundance of insect life which keeps a garden thriving.

“In practical terms, a garden can be a source of both physical and psychological nourishment; in Kintyre we had an extensive vegetable plot in the garden growing a variety of vegetables which sustained the household. In France, our neighbours had a beautiful garden with their own potager where we helped them grow potatoes, tomatoes, beans and herbs which flourished in the hot French summers. Apples and peach trees adorned the garden amidst the hostas, hollyhocks, magnolias and lilies. These were tranquil and happy spaces.

“Alfresco dining features heavily in my paintings. The constant search for shade under the garden trees during the long hot French summers provided plenty of opportunity to paint the dazzling patterns created by dappled light. In my paintings the emphasis is not on specific plants or trees, but trying to capture the sense of tranquility, sunshine and verdant space.”

View Jacqueline’s paintings, and the full exhibition, in the gallery and online until Sunday 21st June.

We’ve brought the garden to the gallery this week, with flowers in the window alongside some wonderful garden-inspired work from Ann Oram RSW.

Into the Garden celebrates gardens in their many forms, exploring the creative engagements that artists develop with their own green spaces. The exhibition includes a special feature of Ann’s paintings as part of her 70th birthday year celebrations, along with new works by Jacqueline Orr RSW RGI PAI, Jennifer Irvine RSW RGI, Jenny Martin RSW, Kate Bentley RSW, Mhairi McGregor RSW, Lesley McLaren, Lorna Sinclair and Craig Jefferson.

The exhibition runs in the gallery until Sunday 21st June - we hope you can join us here to enjoy these beautiful new paintings in person, but if you’re not able to make it you can also view the full exhibition online via our website.

Our new garden-themed exhibition includes a special feature of Ann Oram RSW’s paintings as part of her 70th birthday year.

Talking about how gardens influence her work, Ann says “Gardens are my sanctuary and my studio. Rather than reaching for a ready-made bunch from a florist or supermarket (and I do on occasions!), I seek out the living, breathing abundance of real gardens. It is the flowers I discover there that become the main focus of every composition and still life I paint.

“What draws me to gardens is the element of surprise. The seasons dictate what I find, and I love what that gives me. My travels take me from the grandeur of Kew and Edinburgh Botanical Gardens to the quiet charm of a roadside verge in blossom, a field of oxeye daisies, or a hedgerow thick with cow parsley. I count all of these as gardens.”

You can enjoy ‘Into the Garden’ in the gallery and online via our website until Sunday 21st June.

Kate Bentley feels most at home outdoors, whether in her own garden or exploring botanical gardens, historic estates and open gardens across the UK. She is particularly drawn to the atmosphere of glasshouses, where filtered light, lush foliage, exotic colours and a sense of tranquillity combine to create a rich sensory experience. Her home studio is surrounded by gardens and their influence ’seeps’ into Kate’s work in interesting and surprising ways.

In the studio, Kate is less interested in literal representation than in capturing the emotional and visual impressions that gardens leave behind. Inspired by reflections in windows and doors, fragmented forms and the shifting patterns of leaves and plants, her paintings combine observation and imagination. The resulting works are layered, evocative, often unpredictable but always engaging.

View Kate’s paintings as part of our new garden-themed exhibition Into the Garden - in the gallery and online until Sunday 21st June.

At once cultivated and wild, private and public, everyday and symbolic, throughout history gardens have taken on meanings and roles as varied as their inhabitants and visitors. Artists especially have long celebrated what they offer; practically and aesthetically gardens are sites of creative exploration and sanctuary, offering an immediate link to nature and an ever changing abundance of colour, form and texture. The garden naturally becomes an extension of an artist’s canvas, a living, growing artwork tended to and developed over time, and often feeding back into their painting practice. It is no coincidence that Monet once described his garden at Giverny as his most beautiful work of art!

Many of the artists in the exhibition enjoy working - both gardening and painting, in their gardens.

Pictured are some of the beautiful gardens that have inspired Kate Bentley, Lesley McLaren, Ann Oram and Lorna Sinclair.

The exhibition runs in the gallery and online via our website until Sunday 21st June.
