‘Every print begins with negotiation: between artist and material, precision and unpredictability, process and accident. Ink shifts, plates resist, paper absorbs unexpectedly, and yet through this uncertainty, artists create works of extraordinary depth and clarity.’

Ade Adesina RSA’s work across printmaking and installation celebrates our planet’s beauty while addressing urgent environmental concerns. Currently based in Aberdeen, he studied printmaking at Gray’s School of Art and was the first RSA New Contemporary to be elected to the Academy. Adesina is the co-curator of our upcoming exhibition, Chaos and Control. From Saturday, he brings together some of the foremost names in contemporary printmaking alongside emerging artists who are pushing the boundaries of the medium.

Art has a remarkable ability to change how a space feels💭

After recently refurbishing their offices at Saltire Court in Edinburgh, Quilter Cheviot were keen to introduce some new pieces to their environment through our Art Rental scheme. The selection brings together Woodland Path, a 1934 oil painting by Sir William Gillies RSA, from the RSA Collection with contemporary works by Rhona Fleming, Adrian Gardner and Claire Harkess, sourced directly from the artists’ studios.

Spanning almost 100 years of artistic practice, the works on view move between abstract and figurative approaches, creating a collection that is calming and thought-provoking. A reminder that works made decades apart can still find common ground and enrich the spaces we spend time in every day!

A painter and printmaker, Frances Walker RSA CBE studied at Edinburgh College of Art. Early on in her career, she began working as the sole Teacher of Art for all schools in Harris and North Uist in the Western Isles. She would go on to take up a position at Gray’s School of Art and be a founding member of Peacock Printmakers. But her experience in the Hebrides never left her, leading to a life-long love of wild places. Since then, she’s focused on depicting the most remote landscapes in her work, creating compositions that feature craggy rocks, deserted beaches and coastal scenes.

Join us for Frances Walker: Recent Prints and Rarities in the Academicians’ Gallery from Saturday 27 June, a chance to explore works by one of Scotland’s most highly regarded contemporary artists.

Some moments in your career feel truly surreal. Exhibiting alongside Frances Walker RSA is one of them.
Frances was one of the artists who inspired me during my years at art school, and her work continues to influence and inspire my own practice today. Her prints and paintings have always demonstrated such a profound understanding of landscape, atmosphere and the quiet beauty of the natural world.
To now be showing my work alongside hers in RSA 200 is a genuine privilege and something I never imagined when I first began making prints.
Thank you to Rozelle House Museum and Galleries for making this exhibition possible.

The RSA Schools Art Award has been celebrating student creativity in Scotland since 1986, and this year’s online exhibition is now live!

We received submissions from young people across the country, and our judges had some very tough decisions to make. We’re delighted to announce 35 students and three inspiration art departments have all been awarded prizes. You can explore their work on our website now.

We'd like to wish a huge thank you to Brodies LLP, who have been supporting the awards and championing young Scottish creatives since 2016.

Robbie Bushe RSA’s practice centres on the depiction of detailed, suggestive narratives, frequently set within expansive constructions, and he’s the next artist joining us for our Academician’s Masterclass series! Cutaway Edinburgh and Fragments to Fiction, Bushe’s two masterclasses, separate his key approaches, cutaway construction and fragment-based composition, so that you can understand how narrative paintings are built from observation, selection and invention.

→ Cut Away Edinburgh
Saturday 15 – Sunday 16 August
Learn about Robbie’s practice and explore Edinburgh’s Georgian architecture and modern and brutalist forms before creating your own staged worlds filled with figures, actions and events.

→ Fragments to Fiction
Thursday 14 – Friday 15 January 2027
In this two-day masterclass, Bushe will highlight the use of fragments and collage within contemporary drawing. We’ll explore works on show at the RSA and experiment with structure, space and image-making, combining multiple sources to create an original work.

Today we’re saying farewell to the 200th Annual Exhibition.

A highlight of our programme, this year’s exhibition was especially significant as we celebrated two centuries of supporting Scottish art and architecture. Convened by Annie Cattrell RSA and Fergus Purdie RSA, the exhibition brought together more than 750 vibrant works from across the globe.

We’d like to congratulate all of our exhibitors and Academicians, and thank everyone who visited, supported and purchased from the show. We’re also grateful to our exhibition sponsor, LGT Wealth Management, whose support helped us keep entry to the exhibition free.

⭐️A landmark moment in our history, this exhibition has truly been a special one.
