Murdered Artists' Society

Murdered Artists' Society Daska Theatre and Nomads of Beauty: Murdered Artists' Society Tribute to all the artists who have been murdered, tortured and exiled.

The performance takes the form of a scream for the freedom of art and artists currently being suppressed around the world, based on Kharms' and Vvedensky's life and work. A touching, humorous and tragic show performed by three award-winning actors. Extraordinary play as a comeback for Croatia's acclaimed Daska Theatre, acknowledged for its startling mix of political satire, original music and high

-octane physical performance. Symbolic anniversary of their very first Fringe appearance in 1986. Nominee for the Stage Award for Acting Excellence.

About Daska Theatre

Theatre Daska started performing in 1976 under the influence of student groups in the sixties. We are an experimental theatre company from Sisak, Croatia. Since our formation, we have received numerous awards for our startling mix of political satire, music and high-octane physical performance. Our research into the last Soviet avant-garde group Oberiu and the masterpieces of their leader Daniil Harms began in 1984 with Daska’s street performance Yelizaveta Bam for 21 performers and one truck. It continued with the show Pif, Paf, Puf, based on a short poem by Daniil Harms. Over the last 30 years our shows have included Three Left Hours, Case Harms and Murdered Writers' Society (MWS), a performance inspired by Oberiu, the group of Russian (Soviet) avant-garde artists who flourished after the revolution of 1917 only to be suppressed under Stalin. MWS was created in 2001 as a tribute to all artists whose work has been censored, forbidden or silenced. Our new performance, Murdered Artists’ Society, is intended as a sequel to MWS. This show continues our exploration of the Russian avant-garde and the group OBERIU, drawing on texts by Alexander Vvedensky, and inspired by the creativity of Kazimir Malevich and other art and music artists of the time. Like our previous works, this performance takes the form of a scream for the freedom of art and artists currently being suppressed around the world.
