Last week to see Lines of Intervention 🌿

This is the final week to catch my exhibition at the Hugo Burge Foundation and I’ll be there this weekend as part of their Open Studios!

I’ll be in the glasshouses with Lines of Intervention from 10am–4pm on Saturday & Sunday, so come along, say hello and have a chat about the work, the residency and the walled garden. I’ll also have prints and postcards available to buy.

This exhibition has been such an incredible opportunity. Being given the time and space to return to the walled garden, work alongside the garden team, and develop my research into the lines of human intervention has had a huge impact on my practice. Seeing the project move from sketches and conversations in the garden into a full exhibition in the glasshouses has been incredibly special, and I’m so grateful to everyone at the Foundation who made it possible. 🌱

Love being able to draw outside... life's simple pleasures.

Teeny tiny brush for teeny tiny details on my new toy.... an adjustable stretcher for my chiffon works!!

Please excuse the chaotic home studio set-up 🙈

This was an impulse buy when I saw it, but I have zero regrets. Id been previously making all the stretches for the works which while fun took a lot of time for a temporary support. This has opened up a lot more possibilities.

My other new toy.... a laser cutter!
Im currently working on my first pieces of laser cut chiffon which Ive been working on down at the Edinburgh Open Workshop. Chiffon for anyone who hasnt worked with this super delicate fabric, is nigh on impossible to cut and prone to fraying... badly. The laser cutter (once laborously fixing the chiffon being careful not to pull the grain) cuts it straight and seals the edges. Incredible. Honestly. Super excited to get back and cut more... bigger. Of course.

For now these little ones are great fun, more coming soon!

How do we see Gardens?

I was incredibly fortunate last year to have been their Botanic Artist in Residence at the The Hugo Burge Foundation where I spent a month exploring the gardens, shadowing the gardeners, researching Walled Gardens throughout Scotland, and reflecting on my own practice - absolute bliss.

Walled gardens come with a rich history and uncountable collaborators. The walls are like the sides of a canvas, within which the space is continually drawn upon by gardeners while the more than human world draws in response.

I am currently exhibiting work in the glasshouses which were created in response to my time spent in the gardens.
Including an interactive element in the form of these viewfinders.

After many chats with Toby the head gardener, i started seeing the garden as he sees it. These lines created by his vision. The exhibition explores these lines of human intervention and the tension and the beauty of the more than human world working with and against those lines.

Also exhibited are a series of large-scale chiffon drawings, each based on the six areas of the Garden shown in the viewfinders. Alongside these are drawings and prints all made in reponse to my time spent at the Foundation.

The exhibition is open every friday as part of the Scottish Garden Scheme and the open studios 5th/6th September.

Ive said goodbye to 4 paintings this week... including this painting Embers of Hope.

Embers of Hope is one of four in this series. A series which I first started back in 2024, this is what I had to say about it then:

"The four in this mini series within my "Entanglement" body of work will explore the four elements, earth, fire, water and air, and the devastating impact we as humanity are having on our planet.

FIRE🔥
As our planet grapples with the devastating impacts of wildfires, it's crucial to remember the resilience of nature and the remarkable ability of certain species to thrive in the aftermath of destruction. The Fire Lily, also known as the resurrection plant, symbolizes renewal and regeneration in ecosystems ravaged by fire. 🌺🔥 Despite the devastation, these vibrant blooms emerge from scorched landscapes, reminding us that life finds a way even in the darkest of times. Let's take inspiration from the Fire Lily and recommit ourselves to protecting our planet, so that from the ashes of destruction, we can foster new growth and a brighter future for generations to come 🌍"

Two years later and this feels more poignant than ever.

The world is burning. This is no longer a prediction, climate change is here and we need eorld leaders to take it seriously.

Like what my painting symbolises, Destruction and Hope, I still have Hope, we have to otherwise all is already lost. We have to hope but we also have to act.

We’re delighted to announce What We Hold Still, a new exhibition bringing together small-scale works by artists from The Art & Nature Collective, exploring stillness, attention, memory, and the art of noticing. 🌿

From fleeting moments in nature to memories, textures, emotions, and quiet observations, the artists explore what it means to hold something physically, emotionally, and conceptually.

Each postcard-sized artwork becomes its own little container — holding an idea, a moment, a memory, or a connection to the more-than-human world. 🌱

As part of the exhibition programme, two leading scientists from the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh will present public talks exploring overlooked and extraordinary aspects of the plant world:

🍃Saturday 23rd May 3pm
Dr Neil Bell, bryologist, will speak on mosses, liverworts and hornworts — revealing their surprising diversity and global significance.

🍂Sunday 24th May 3pm
Dr Becky Yahr, Lichen Biodiversity Scientist, will share insights into the fascinating world of lichens and their vital ecological roles.

I’ve been working away quietly on a new body of work developed following my residency with the .

Ive always wanted to take my work beyond the boundaries of a piece of paper or panel. In the past ive physically taken original paintings outside, taken reproductions into woods and created work to be exhibited outside.

But the work always felt separate... distinct... from the world around it. I wanted to find a way to make beautiful detailed paintings and drawings that blend with a space, work with it, collaborate with it as an end product.

After lots of experimentation, I settled on chiffon. A material id used a lot in a previous life where I made clothes and costumes. Originally pursuing a career in textile and design.

I love chiffon, but its hard to work with and I'm still learning how to draw on it to get the effects I want. I have a long way to go but I've not felt this excited ir challenged for a long time. Something new, something scary, something I'm continually failing at day after day, but I'm also learning, succeeding, and having fun...

These pieces will be Installed within the glasshouses, the works invite you to look through, move around, and step into the drawing—into a space that is continually being shaped and reshaped.

Opening 16 June and running throughout the summer in the glasshouses!
