TMSA Scotland

TMSA Scotland In this way they are able to sustain the specific cultural traditions of their area, as well as those of Scotland generally.

Set up in 1966, the Traditional Music & Song Association of Scotland aims to promote, preserve and present all the music and song traditions of Scotland through local branch and national activities. Encouraging both widespread popular participation and individual artistic excellence, the TMSA branches work on a local level to provide opportunities for universal participation by running festivals,

ceilidhs, concerts, workshops and competitions. On a national level and in partnership with other traditional arts organisations, the TMSA campaigns to have the intrinsic value of Scottish Traditional Art forms recognised and to secure current and future funding for them.

Choral Connections
Saturday 6 June 2026
7.15pm - 9.30pm
Introducing the Gaelic and Icelandic choir performance 'Choral Connections', an event promising to present an unforgettable programme of traditional and contemporary music from both cultures. From Stirling Gaelic Choir's dramatic 'Òran do Bhonapart', one of the choir's entries at the 2025 Royal National Mòd, to Söngfjelagið from Iceland sharing a selection of traditional and modern Icelandic songs, offering what will be, for nearly all of us in the choir, our first live experience of Icelandic music. Thanks to Historic Environment Scotland, the 80 singers will feature in one of Scotland's finest and most historic venues - the Great Hall of Stirling Castle, and fill the Great Hall with their amazing Sound. The choirs will be performing from their own repertoire and will also join together to sing in each other's languages to enhance the connection.
Looking forward to seeing you at this momentous occasion!

Friends of Wighton are hosting a Lunchtime Recital with Manuel Balanguer-Cortes on Wednesday 3rdJune, 1.15 -1.45pm

From North-East Spain originally, Manuel has lived in Scotland since 2001. He picked up his first whistle at 15 having already learned to play the jew's harp. He also plays a variety of wind instruments, such as Duduk or Willow Pipe. Manuel plays mainly a mixture of Scottish, Spanish, Nordic and Irish music. A regular guest at the Kirriemuir Festival, he can also be found playing the odd tune (literally!) in local sessions across Angus.

The Kim Carnie Band will be playing in Comrie White Church this Saturday 23rd May at 8pm.

Kim Carnie is one of those rare talents that you may have already come across without even realising it, thanks to her numerous compositions for films, festivals and even computer games. Renowned for her tender yet powerful vocals and ability to blend Gaelic traditional material with her own songs in English, Kim blends traditional Gaelic roots with cinematic, contemporary soundscapes. Supported by her equally renowned bandmates, Megan Henderson and Innes White, this will be a stunning gig.

We are profoundly saddened to hear about the passing of two of our Honorary members over the past weekend - Professor Ian Russell MBE and Aonghas Grant Sr.

Ian Russell accomplished many things over the years such as being the Director of the Elphinstone Institute, setting up the North Atlantic Fiddle Convention, helping organise the Cullerlie Traditional singing weekend and his collection work including documenting, supporting, and writing about the rich carolling traditions of the Pennines. He was also involved with the TMSA Aberdeen Branch committee and events for a long period of time.

Aonghas Grant Sr was known as the 'left-handed fiddler of Lochaber', and an excellent musician and teacher - celebrating young talented fiddlers with his red tassels. A fluent Gaelic speaker, he was also involved in the Fèis movement, particularly the Lochaber and Acharacle Fèisean. To quote Shooglenifty "his music will live on through the hands of the many musicians he taught, and through the hands of those they teach in their turn."
