Spreadsheets, free shows, and perfectly timed dumplings. Episode 11 of Podcast 13, the Venue 13 Podcast is officially live!

This week, we are also joined by the exceptionally talented Chris Davis . After a seven-year break, he is returning to Edinburgh with The 40-Year-Old Ballerino—a deeply personal memoir play that blends physical theater, stand-up comedy, and an entire on-stage ballet barre class.

But first, we tackle a highly debated topic: What type of Fringe-goer are you? We look at everything from the hyper-organized "Full Planner" to the spontaneous "Go with the Flow" crowds sharing our best advice on avoiding festival burnout (and why you occasionally need to eat your food with an actual knife and fork).

To wrap it all up, we preview three incredible events happening around Scotland this June, including the Eden Festival and The Karate Kid The Musical at the Festival Theatre.

We have big news and Episode 9 is finally here to spill the beans!

Venue 13 is teaming up with Soft Serve Cartel and renewable energy partners to bring the Edinburgh Fringe’s FIRST carbon-conscious vegan food trailer to the festival this August 2026!

Festival food is notoriously carbon-intensive, usually relying on loud, smelly diesel generators. We want to prove that vendors can run at scale on completely clean energy using a hybrid of hydrogen fuel cells and solar panels.

In this episode, Ian and Vanesa are joined by special guest Nico Barcella. We talk about Ian's history with solar arts projects, Vanesa's background in hydrogen tech, and Nico’s incredible community-driven food ventures (yes, Unity Doner's spit-cooked vegan kebabs and Soft Serve Cartel's ice cream are coming to the trailer!). We also close out with a beautiful play reading of Undertow by Keith Barker.

We’ve launched a crowdfunding campaign (https://crowdfund.edfringe.com/p/venue-13-vegan-food-trailer) with a target of £6,800 to cover the site infrastructure and licenses. Whether you can donate, sponsor the trailer, or simply share this post, every bit helps us change how festival food operates.

Theatres across the UK are gaining sustainability certifications, from pantomime companies to major venues. The next frontier to conquer is energy.

Many Arts organisations have set out extensive sustainability frameworks telling the industry what needs to change.

The National Theatre has achieved the Theatre Green Book Basic Standard across productions, buildings and operations, embedding sustainable practice as a contractual requirement for all staff and freelancers, and has cut its energy emissions by 26% since 2019.

Culture for Climate Scotland equips organisations and strategic bodies to harness the role of culture in achieving transformational environmental change, providing tools to measure, monitor and reduce carbon emissions across the sector.

Venue 13 shares the plight for sustainability. Our hydrogen/solar pilot is a crowdfunded, community-backed project to prove that clean power works in a festival setting, cutting down the reliance on diesel generators.

If you work in the arts, renewables or simply care about what comes next, we need you by our side backing this project.
