The Brain Breathes Out
is the combination of RFT's two lockdown films Past Trauma/ Tense Present and Exhale/ Anti-Climax as companion pieces exploring disadvantaged fear in the lockdown. Told from different sides of a relationship and at opposite ends of the crisis. One of the pair looks to the past, national myths and his own trauma from which he has barely recovered. He knits a narrative for his neighbours spiced with fears for their vulnerability and his own visions of disaster. The second has a forward looking optimism albeit strained by the circumstances as blow after blow makes her realise she is on the losing side in the "new normal": one of the non-essential.
These films were made adhering to Covid restrictions while the creators were under lockdown in Edinburgh and Aviemore.

Directed by Robin Osman
Written by Ben Blow
Performed by Madeleine McGirk and Alastair William Duncan

Exhale/ Anti-Climax

A film by RFT

Edinburgh: Life in lockdown.

Having come through the first lockdown and furlough and back into the wide world our narrator can see the end in sight. Unfortunately that’s the moment when the system cuts her loose as a financial burden. And so the second lockdown descends into sleepless nights and empty days and a desperate search for meaning in a life on hold.

A companion piece to last year's Past Trauma/Tense Present , Exhale/Anti-Climax is our new short film premiering for the first time.
