One week until the library opening event in Jura! We’ve been packing the entire collection of 1984 and their respective portable handmade shelving boxes.

Have a look at this pair of 1984’s, sent from the Faroh Islands. We love its big brother eyes and that we can add it to our list of copies in different languages - Faroese!

See you in Jura Village Hall on the 8th June!

You can’t beat a well loved book!

We’re currently setting through our copies of 1984 and logging the individual characteristics of each book. We’re looking out for things like handwritten notes, news paper cutouts, unique front covers.

If you have a copy, check out our pinned post and send it to us!

It’s world book day!

To mark a very relevant day we wanted to share a special copy that was donated to the project from the USA - it’s a first edition and looks to have been previously owned by in North Carolina!

It’s these little details that make each book unique and we are very happy to have it in the library!

The Winston Smith Library team is growing!

The large task of collecting 1,984 books has been a long term job for Hans. Since November, Mareike and Ruari have been helping with book sourcing, social media and admin to get the library ready for Jura! There are also a group of volunteers getting together to create a database including every copy of 1984 that is in the library.

We’ve been meeting at Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop to touch base and we decided to snap a photo in front of shelves filled with 1984 to share.

Current book count 1300 and rising!

First post!

The Winston Smith Library of Victory and Truth (TWSLOV&T) by Hans K Clausen is an international participatory project, an art installation, a sculpture, a library, a museum, a venue, a phenomena. It will be a place for meeting, reading, writing, creating, sharing, debating and performing.

The work will consist of 1,984 copies of George Orwell’s iconic novel 1984; many personalised with notes, mementoes, and traces from readers, donated and sourced from around the world.

We are still seeking donations - would you have a copy of 1984 on the top shelf of your bookcase? Send it in and receive a Winston Smith Library badge which will grant you a lifetime membership to the library!
