Swipe to watch an exciting tapestry cutting off ✂️
 
This week, Apprentice Weaver Emma’s latest project was cut from the loom. Since February, she has been working on numerous challenges, including this colourful, Paul Klee inspired tapestry focusing on colour blending and practicing the Dovecot logo.
 
🌟 Fun fact: All Dovecot tapestries include the weavers’ initials in the tab. Emma is the third weaver in the studio with the initials EW, so her middle name will now be woven into her tapestries too!

In the 1970s, Big Biba took everyday grocery shopping in a radical new direction🥫

Located in the basement of their London department store, the Food Hall was designed by Steven Thomas as a witty celebration of Pop Art. Diverging from Biba’s typical Art Deco aesthetic, Thomas transformed 350 everyday items from wine and baked beans to soap suds and dog food into playful displays and stylish branded products, redefining the high street shopping experience completely. You can take a closer look at these original Biba Food Hall products on display in our exhibition.

Did you know that Dovecot Studios used to be a swimming pool? 🏊‍♂️

The sun is shining here in Edinburgh and it’s officially swimming weather. This feeling is captured perfectly in Baths and Bathers by Douglas Grierson, a tapestry created to mark Dovecot’s 2008 move into our home at the restored Victorian swimming baths on Infirmary Street.

This playful design gathers iconic bathers from Seurat to Matisse against a Hockney-inspired backdrop, featuring a humorously placed Damien Hirst shark. From the ceramic tiles reflecting our colourful wool spools to the towel draped over the balcony, the tapestry honours the building’s past and collaborative present.

Meet Dovecot Exhibitions Manager and Curator, Heather Carroll, as she discusses the idea behind ‘Bring Oot Your Biba' 🦚

The response to this campaign exceeded the teams expectations. What started as a call for entries has become the centerpiece of The Biba Story: 1964-1975, shaped by a collection of personal submissions. Thank you to our community who contributed cherished garments and memories, your stories have been essential in bringing this exhibition to life.
