Phoebe Anna Traquair is known to have decorated only three pieces of furniture and was commissioned in 1908 to decorate this Steinway piano for Frank Tennant as part of the restoration and furnishing of Lympne Castle, Kent. The piano features beautifully detailed watercolour studies of ‘The Song of Solomon’ and illustrations of ‘Willowwood’, her favourite Rossetti poem. In addition the inside piano lid was painted with Pan playing his pipes, with Psyche’s torso and Eros (this section of the piano lid was painted out in 1911 at the request of Mrs Tennant, a pianist). You can see the piano and other examples of Phoebe Traquair’s work at the National Museums of Scotland. National Museums Scotland
