Recipe for one giant biscuit:

• Foam blocks
• Scenic coatings
• Paint
• One oversized bite mark
• A workshop full of foam dust

Mix thoroughly. Bake until biscuit-shaped.

These behind-the-scenes shots show the making of a set of giant Borders Biscuits for a product launch with Thomas Ramage of Grid Productions. From rough foam carvings through to finished props ready for Calton Hill.

One of those projects that's equal parts fabrication, problem-solving and resisting the urge to put the kettle on. ☕🍪

June already. 📅

Which means festival season is suddenly much closer than it feels.

Over the years we've built sets, stages, props, installations and all manner of unusual things for festivals, events and performances across Scotland and beyond. We've worked in theatres, museums, public spaces, fields, streets and venues where access windows seem to get shorter every year.

If you're pulling together plans for the summer and need scenic construction, props, fabrication, installation support or those inevitable last-minute fixes, we're here to help.

From one-off props and branded installations to larger outdoor builds, our workshop team brings decades of experience delivering projects to tight deadlines and challenging locations.

And if history tells us anything, there are still a few festival projects out there that haven't quite made it from sketchbook to reality yet.

Get in touch if we can help bring them to life. 🪄

Not every scenic build calls for subtlety.

A look back at the set construction for Crocodile Fever at the Traverse Theatre, designed by Grace Smart. A brilliantly bonkers world of pink kitchens, oversized emotion and gloriously chaotic family drama. 🩷

From tiled flooring and textured brickwork to custom-built kitchen units, windows, stairs and all the tiny details in between, this was one of those projects where the workshop slowly transformed into an entire domestic interior.

The finished set perfectly matched the energy of the production itself: grotesquely comic, slightly unhinged and impossible to ignore.

Always satisfying seeing something go from scale model…to full theatrical madness. 🎭

There are easier ways to travel through the city...but they’re definitely less memorable. 🛞

A look back at the making of this giant human-powered wheel for Autin Dance Theatre's Parade - The Giant Wheel, a large-scale moving performance celebrating the power of people from different walks of life coming together.

Built in-house using welded aluminium, custom timber sections and plenty of careful testing before it rolled out into the real world, the 12-foot wheel became part of a moving spectacle powered by street artists, live music and a community cast of performers.

Projects like this are always a mix of engineering, fabrication and figuring things out as you go.

Exactly the kind of challenge we love. 💛

How big is too big? 😎

We built these giant sunglasses for GoFibre last summer. Starting with plywood cut-outs in the workshop we ended up with a pair big enough to make a Jack Russell look like a Hollywood celebrity.

One of those projects that involves fabrication, painting, sanding, problem-solving and periodically standing back to say: “Maybe they should actually be bigger.”

Got an idea that probably shouldn’t exist at full scale? We can help with that.

Still waiting for the sun to arrive this month, but we’re optimistic that golf weather is on the horizon. ☀️⛳️

And if 18 holes sounds a bit much, there’s always mini golf.

This was a bespoke installation created by Big House for People & Co at last year’s Genesis Scottish Open - featuring scenic dunes, bunkers, stonework and a lighthouse obstacle inspired by the Scottish coastline.

One of those projects that was equal parts scenic build, fabrication challenge and trying to keep artificial grass under control in the workshop.

A really enjoyable one to work on.

Throwback to this striking set build for designer Gillian Argo and Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh - built from triple-wall polycarbonate and painted timber framing.

A nice example of how simple construction materials can be used to create something really visually effective on stage.

The translucent polycarbonate completely changed depending on the lighting and angle, giving the set a very different feel throughout the performance.

With festival season slowly appearing on the horizon, it’s a reminder that every set starts life in the workshop long before opening night. 🎭

🎻 Behind the scenes at the National Museums Scotland.

For this evening event produced by 21CC, we created a bespoke illuminated stage backdrop for a live string quartet performance - designed to sit comfortably within the architecture of the museum while still making an impact once the lights went down.

The build combined angled scenic framing, integrated LED lighting and a clean, high-gloss finish, all designed and fabricated in-house before being installed after hours in a tight turnaround window.

Projects like this are always a balance of aesthetics, practicality and logistics:

⚡ Fast installation in a live venue
💡 Integrated lighting built directly into the structure
🔧 Fabrication precise enough to align cleanly on site
🏛 Designed to complement a historic space without overpowering it

A lovely project to be part of - and a reminder that sometimes the quietest scenic elements do a huge amount of work in shaping the atmosphere of an event.

💦 A floating stage. Water cannons. Live outdoor theatre.

Nothing complicated about that…right? 🤣

Throwback to Cargo by Iron-Oxide, created in co-production with Edinburgh Mela and performed at Leith Links. An ambitious large-scale production that combined striking visual storytelling with some serious fabrication challenges behind the scenes.

Swipe through and you’ll see how these pieces started life: steel frameworks, workshop testing, welding, balancing weight, movement and durability… before becoming part of the finished performance.

Projects like this are a reminder that scenic construction isn’t just about how something looks - it’s about making creative ideas physically work in real-world conditions.

Still one of our favourite archive projects to revisit. 💛

Recent work for the NOVA Project by Stellar Quines Theatre Company

We were delighted to build and install a series of outdoor display structures for this project on Kirkcaldy’s seafront, celebrating the stories of local women, non-binary and trans people whose contributions to the town deserve to be recognised and remembered.

The structures were designed and fabricated in the workshop before being installed on the promenade - built to withstand the realities of the Fife coast while creating an accessible and durable public exhibition space.

Always rewarding seeing a project move from workshop fabrication to a finished installation in the public realm.

The NOVA Project is part of Stellar Quines’ wider programme of creative work in and for Kirkcaldy throughout 2026.
