I'm delighted to share that I have been selected as Los Angeles Printmaking Society's Print Day in May prize winner this year!

Every year on the first Saturday in May, printmakers around the world post images on social media or via the Print Day in May website of what they have been working on that day, tagging sponsors who then select their prize winners.

This is my submission for this year. I've been working on this for a while now and just have one tweak left to do : )

Quite often during the summer holidays I'll head over to the Isle of Mull or the Isle of Iona with my family. Both islands are part of the Inner Hebrides which are located off the west coast of Scotland.

A couple of years ago, when we weren't able to make it there in the summer, we ended up going towards the end of September. Early one morning, myself and my youngest Seamus walked down towards the shore close to where we were staying in Iona. Both of us were half asleep, just standing there taking in the gorgeousness of the sunrise across the water over Mull. Usually we would catch the sunsets in the summer but the not the sunrises, so this was a lovely treat. A cherished memory of mine πŸ’›

I'm so pleased to be selected as a prize winner and would like to say big thank you to both and Print Day In May.

Today is Print Day in May which takes place on the first Saturday in May, every year.

I wasn't too sure if I would be able to make it to Fife Dunfermline Printmakers today, but was very pleased to manage a session early this morning and to take part in PDiM 2026.

I've been working on this print for a while and just about there - a slight adjustment of the sky colour and then I'll be happy😊

This collagraph with chine-colle is based on an early morning view of Mull whilst standing on shore of Iona. I've blended various colours of ink directly onto the plate to create a hazy effect. The light is not the best in the workshop so I'll share a higher quality image of my print once it's dry.

This time last week, I was midway through my 1-week artist residency at Edinburgh Printmakers which I won after being selected as the prize winner of Edinburgh Printmakers Print Day In May award. I had a wonderful time there developing ideas and new prints.

I usually use etching and drypoint techniques for my prints, but decided to concentrate on collagraphs after attending the Edinburgh Printmakers Collagraphs Summer Course with Gillian Murray - which I highly recommend 😊

I'll be sharing full images of my prints from Edinburgh Printmakers once I pick them up this weekend.

My time there was thoroughly enjoyable; the facilities are great, staff were lovely, and there’s lots of natural light which gives the print workshop a spacious and bright atmosphere, as you can see in some of the photos.

I'll look forward to returning to Edinburgh Printmakers for further printmaking sessions.

Many thanks to Edinburgh Printmakers for making this a memorable experience and to Print Day In May for this great opportunity.

I'm getting ready for my one-week printmaking residency coming up in March and in the process of working out ideas in my sketchbook & creating more fully formed drawings.
Some of which will be selected to either be etched or used for collagraphs.

Just a few more drawings to do before moving onto composition tweaks & deciding on final colours.

I've really been loving concentrating on drawing at the moment πŸ’›

You Can't Hold Back the Night is currently on show as part of the Society of Scottish Artists 127th Annual Exhibition at the Royal Scottish Academy (RSA).

There's only one week left of the exhibition so catch it while you can!

You Can't Hold Back the Night is part of a series that focusses on the radiating reassurance of light sources found in the dark of night.

This work was created at the same time as another print, Feel Gladdened by the Moon. In the development of these two works I felt it was important that they worked as prints in their own right but really wanted them to connect as companion pieces as well. You will see from the images how the prints align.

I'm hoping at some point in the near future to exhibit both prints together, so if you run a gallery, are a curator, or know of any opportunities where this could be possible please do get in touch, thanks. 😊
