Hedda has been with me for years. My first memory of her was upon my return from theatre studies in London, sitting at my friend's dad's house, a professor of psychiatry. I asked him to read the play and analyze Hedda's enigmatic character.
'Border line', he said.
I nodded and jotted it down, realizing as he was speaking that it was going to take more than analysis to truly understand her.
This adaptation is three years in the making and has seen numerous rewrites, re-imagines, and translations - but through them all, she stood there before my eyes.
Hedda.
Jaded, medicated, bored of a life of luxury and opportunities, standing in her private pool holding a champagne glass and staring at a landscape only wealth can attain.
Self-destruction is an element embedded in all of us. It is elusive, malicious, and always backed up with excellent excuses. We keep ourselves from achieving self-realization, smother our passions and convince ourselves that there is nothing to gain from them. It is the essence of Hedda.
I want to thank our one-of-a-kind cast:
Lilly, young Hedda, my heart.
Sharon, the beautiful and captivating Thea.
Benny, the twisted and sharp Ejlert.
Ben, the witty and charismatic Brack.
Yiftach, the hilarious and mesmerizing Tesman.
And Noa, Hedda Dear, who embodied everything I imagined for the character and so much more.
To our wonderful team, and the people who made possible, we are so GRATEFUL.
