Long before machines, humans were already master sewists. The very first needles were carved from bone or animal horn, with thread made from animal sinew - and people have been sewing by hand for roughly 20,000 years. 🧵

Every time you thread a needle, you're taking part in one of humanity's oldest continuous crafts. What's the oldest sewing technique you still use today?

You’ve probably seen these little shoe‐shaped pincushions in vintage sewing kits - but did you know they actually have a fascinating history?

In the Victorian and Edwardian eras, miniature shoes were symbols of good luck, domestic prosperity, and the “journey” of life. Women kept tiny decorative shoes on mantels and dressing tables, so when sewing tools became more ornate, the shoe motif naturally found its way into pincushions.

Shoemakers’ families even made them from leather scraps and sold them at markets, which is why the shape became associated with craftsmanship and artisan trades.

And it wasn’t just decorative — the long, narrow shape of a shoe makes a surprisingly brilliant pincushion. It’s stable, doesn’t roll, and the toe and heel give natural zones for different pins. Practical and pretty.
