Fox Spring Music

Fox Spring Music Creative, professional mix engineering. Based in Edinburgh, Scotland. That was me off and running. My real passion though is for mixing. Is the bass wiry or fat?

Fox Spring Music is a music production and mixing business founded in Edinburgh, Scotland by myself, Alasdair Easton. The business itself is new, being founded in 2022, but I've been involved in music and music production for many years. In fact music and tech has been a big part of my life since my 80's schooldays when I got my ZX Spectrum and, later, a cheap and terrible drum machine that plugge

d into the back of it. Along the way I became a bass player, a guitarist and a drummer. I am catastrophic on keyboards (but it's amazing what you can do with MIDI editing software!). For years I fought the urge to dive in deep, thinking it was just a seductive distraction from composing and playing, but it kept calling to me. Eventually I thought "Why am I resisting this?" and went all-in on mixing. Good decision and here we are. THE NOTES ARE ONLY HALF THE MAGIC

The way I see it, in music, the notes are only half the magic. What I mean is there are two parts to experiencing music: there's the musical content, like notes, rhythms, harmonies and lyrics; and second, there's the actual sound itself. For example are the drums deep and punchy? Do they have controlled, focussed power or are they raucous, trashy and exuberant? Is it deep and satisfying or edgy and threatening? The pure enjoyment of sound itself and the emotions it evokes have always been at least half the fun for me. But both parts need the other: the notes can't exist without sound, and the sounds don't make any sense without notes to play. The challenge is in mixing these two worlds, the music and the sonics, so that each enhances the other and the combination carries the emotion and power the artist intended. At times the job is really creative and at times intensely technical. It takes a love of music and a love of "technical stuff". Which is right where I began, trying to make music with my ZX Spectrum and my terrible drum machine in 1984. Along the way, playing in bands, writing, producing and recording with others, I've deepened my understanding of music and the creative struggle that bands and artists are engaged in. I've also discovered an obsession for the techniques and the technology of mixing. Finally, I've been around on the planet long enough to know the value of professionalism and the joy of working with people who care deeply about doing a great job. I aim to be that guy every time. So please get in touch if you feel I can help with your musical projects. Cheers,
Alasdair

Fantastic experience yesterday - a behind-the-scenes tour of the King's Theatre in Edinburgh during its major restoration project. From backstage to front-of-house, from rooftop to basement, we were amazed by the scale of the work. It's going to be spectacular when it's finished. Can't wait to see the first show when it re-opens. Here's the view from the rooftop!

An unlucky break turned this former pro-athlete into an aspiring musician, and he’s just launched his debut single, written, recorded and filmed entirely in Edinburgh.

Super-happy and proud to be selected by Edinburgh Jam Group as their "go to" mix engineer. They're a great bunch of people doing cool things for the Edinburgh music scene. Keep an eye on their socials for details of their open jam nights, open mics and more around the city. They also offer rehearsal and recording facilites (including video) at their studio in Newbridge. I'm delighted to be connected to the great work they do.

Edinburgh Jam Group is proud to announce our affiliation with Alasdair Easton of Foxspring Music as our recommended go-to for audio mixing projects!

The Power of Mixing: here's a short, no nonsense video that shows what a good mix can do for your music. The video flicks back and forwards between my mix and the unmixed version. Feel free to ask me anything about the mix or any of my mix decisions. And if you'd like to hire me to mix your tracks then just drop me a message. I'm always happy to talk about music and interesting projects.

To hear the full impact of the changes please listen on the best speakers/headphones you have available. The track is by a cool band called Roach Girl, with members from New Orleans and Connecticut. What a killer (ha!) opening line on this track. Love it.

Big thanks to Roach Girl for allowing this mix and video.

Here's a brilliant, insightful video for artists and bands to watch if you're interested in how a mix engineer thinks about your music. It's a great example of how we plan mix decisions to maximise emotional impact. If you've seen my own website you'll know how much importance I place on emotion in a production. I wish I could have made this video but it turns out a grammy winner has beaten me to it. πŸ™‚
I've shared the video start-point at the vital moment. The key messages come very quickly (although the whole video after that is long). Don't be put off by its billing as a mix tutorial. The subject I'm talking about here is every bit as relevant to artists and bands as to budding mixers. Let me know what you think.

This will be a really good night. These Edinburgh Jam folks are great people: they run a charity-funded studio and rehearsal space, plus events and training. They do these open mic nights about once a month plus open jams at the studio almost every Friday night. Really open and welcoming. Keep an eye on their page for event details and dates.

Hello everyone, welcome to my newly-minted page. If you have an up-coming album, EP or single you need mixed then get in touch. You can check out www.foxspringmusic.co.uk for some examples of my work. I'm looking forward to meeting new bands and artists, and mixing some great new music.

I'm based in Edinburgh, Scotland and I'd be especially happy to bump into some local faces on here.

In the meantime though, I'm just glad to join the Facebook party. Here's to new adventures, new friends, new discoveries and new music!

All the best,
Alasdair.
