Here are the first round questions from Home Bar Quiz Wed Sept 2. As with all my quizzes I try to make the first round fairly straight forward (as well as interesting) and accessible to all teams.

I didn't have many teams this evening and perhaps next week may be the last. What I would like to know is what attracts people to quizzes In Edinburgh run (for instance) by Gooses quizzes or Dr Paul Quizzes? In my opinion they are utter drivel. They usually consist of matter of fact type question such as - who wrote that, what's the capital of this country, who starred in this film etc. Just bland after bland questions that never impart any interesting facts.

1. With approximately 1,080 outlets across the UK, how are the German supermarket chain Albrecht Discount better known to shoppers.

3. On March 2, 1969 which supersonic passenger jet took its first successful test flight.

4. What phrase does Arnold Schwarzenegger first say when refused entry to a police station in the 1984 movie 'The Terminator'.

5. In a standard pack, which playing card shares its name with a Batman villain.

6. Which New York City skyscraper sat largely empty for years after opening in 1931 during the Great Depression, forcing owners to turn on lights in vacant offices to make the tower look busy from the street.

7. In Georgia, a version of which British television quiz show was originally called ‘Vis Unda Otsi Atasi 20000’, which translates as ‘Who Wants 20,000?’.

8. Which Mediterranean island country is also known as ‘George Cross Island’.

9. In which South American country is the city of Medellin – notorious in the 1980s and 1990s as the centre of the cartel run by drug lord Pablo Escobar, the self–proclaimed King of Co***ne.

10. What do the cast of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s stage musical ‘Starlight Express’ wear on their feet’.

11. In Cockney rhyming slang a ‘Pavarotti’ is what amount of money.

12. Which Britney Spears number one single was accompanied by a music video that was shot at Venice High School in Los Angeles, the same school that was the setting for the film ‘Grease’.

13. True or False: Jane Seymour was the only one of King Henry VIII’s wives to wear spectacles.

14. The flag of which Californian city contains a rising phoenix in the centre, often assumed to refer to the city's recovery from the 1906 earthquake and subsequent fires.

15. 6 Points: Men’s Tennis Grand Slam Singles Nationalities: To date eight male tennis players have won 10 or more Grand Slam singles titles. They come from six different countries. Name these countries.

And so it continues. Perhaps with the Edinburgh Festival being over things may pick up a bit? We shall see. I will have three different quizzes prepared - the one I use will be depend on the turnout.

Pub quiz review. I met an old friend on Wednesday night at Home Bar quiz who asked me if I wanted to go to a Thursday night quiz. I informed him that I was unaware of any decent Thursday night quizzes in this town - the vast majority are run by people / outfits more concerned with making money than producing creative content. Anyhow - I reluctantly turned up, but with very low expectations as I'd been to one of this chancers quizzes before, albeit not for a year or four. Sometimes in life things don't change, especially for the better!! The quiz was awful (my low expectations were disappointingly accurate). Out of common courtesy I won't mention the name of the outfit running this charade or the bar (not their fault). I should also add that the young lady hosting the quiz (being paid minimum wage) was very nice and the poor product on offer was nowt to do with her. If anyone really needs to know which company were running this (so called) quiz or the name of the bar (to avoid on future quiz nights) them get in touch and I will provide you with the necessary info.
