We’re excited to share our new Artist for Wriggle Room is… Ella Hempsted! (.hempsted)

Ella will design and deliver creative sessions for early years and their caregivers with Towner’s learning team, families and our community partner Willingdon Trees Community Centre () The programme relaunches this autumn - check out upcoming dates on our website.

Ella Hempsted is a multi-disciplinary artist educator based in Brighton. Ella’s approach to making and facilitating is always process driven. Her interests lie in the investigation and experimentation of the potential of materials. Her chosen materials are usually found or collected, saved from being waste to be repurposed and reimagined. This way of working has led to a playful approach to making. There is always space left for the unexpected, learning through doing is prioritised, and a focus is placed on process over outcomes.

2 September marks the anniversary of the day that Eric Ravilious took off on a search-and-rescue mission in 1942. The plane he was flying in went missing off the coast of Iceland. The wreckage was never recovered.

On the same date in 2026, Carol Lockwood delivered her father's RAF log book to Towner. Carol's father, Lieutenant Alfred "Ginge" Culver DFM, was the pilot of the same plane. The RAF log book will be on display in The Ravilious Collection from 8 September.

Carol Lockwood will be also be at Towner on 8 October for an in-conversation and book signing event with author Melody Foreman, about Melody's new non-fiction book, "Love As Strong As Death: Ravilious, The Pilot & The Missing Aircraft". You can book tickets now on our website.

Eastbourne Farmers Market returns this Saturday, and the weather is on our side ☀☀

Join us from 9.00am to 1.00pm outside Towner and browse a range of delicious food, beverages and wares from local farms and makers.

We'll have over 30 stalls as well as an excellent brocante area with a vast array of interesting antiques.

Comrades in Art: Artists Against Fascism, now showing at Towner Eastbourne’s top-floor galleries, is stuffed to the rafters with over 320 loans from 62 public and private collections. The narrative is unmissable, taking up almost as much wall space as the art on view. It tells a story that most people in Britain have never heard, about an organisation that most people in Britain have never heard of, and manages to feel both nostalgic and relevant throughout, without ever struggling to put ideals across.

This October, we're hosting a special in-conversation event between artist Cecilia Fiona and writer Jennifer Higgie, programmed alongside Cecilia’s current exhibition at Towner, Spirals Gathering, Time Breathing. Cecilia and Jennifer will discuss Cecilia’s exhibition, her new works and wider artistic practice. There will be 15 minutes at the end for audience questions.

Drawing inspiration from microbiology, quantum physics and processes of transformation, Fiona's first institutional solo exhibition in the UK comprises an impressive immersive installation of new sculptures and paintings across Towner's ground-floor gallery.

James Owen, The Round House, undated.

As part of Heritage Open Days' annual celebration of England's history, we're hosting a special talk celebrating the life and art of James Owen, led by his great-great-grandson Russell Owen, followed by a visit to Towner's Art Store.

Owen specialised in capturing the coastal charm, rolling scenery, and town life of Eastbourne, the South Downs, and surrounding Sussex areas. In this Illustrated talk, Russell Owen will delve into family history to reveal more about the artist, his life and his inspirations.

Learn illustration and lino printing techniques inspired by Edward Bawden, a close friend of Eric Ravilious, whose versatile and charming illustrative style continues to influence artists today.

In the first session, you will have the exciting opportunity to visit the Towner Art Store with Sara Cooper, Towner’s Head of Collections & Exhibitions, to view our collection of Bawden’s works up close, and to learn a little more about his life and work.

Digging Horizons, a new series of ecology focused events, starts this September!

🌳Saturday 5 September: Edible Ecology Walk with artist Rain Wu

With Rain Wu and ecologist Laura Blaker, explore the landscapes around Black Robin Farm and enjoy edible creations by Rain, inspired by the eating habits of butterflies and caterpillars that call chalk grassland their home.

🍃Saturday 12 September: Creative Writing Workshop with artist & writer Alinah Azadeh

Explore the possibility of imagining new futures at downland sites, writing through a ‘what if’, ‘if only’ and ‘if this carries on’ lens. This is a genre long used by artists, writers and filmmakers as a tool for visioning in turbulent, precarious times.

These events are part of Digging Horizons, a series of autumn talks, walks and events exploring new approaches to landscape, ecology and archaeology. Together, these events will test and shape future activities for Towner Seven Sisters, Towner's forthcoming site at Black Robin Farm. Meet, experiment and engage with the cultivation of a cultural site stitched into the landscape. Digging Horizons is made possible with The National Lottery Heritage Fund ().
