It was fantastic to see such a great turnout for our Treasure Island familiarisation and workshop on Wednesday.

​If you couldn't make it, don't worry—you're still very welcome to audition this coming Monday.

To make things as easy as possible, we even have rehearsal tracks ready to help you practice the audition pieces at home.

Pirates, Betrayal, and the Ultimate Dramatic Duet 🏴‍☠️⚓

​When Robert Louis Stevenson wrote Treasure Island in 1881, his words became more than just an adventure story—he practically invented the entire pirate culture we know today. The peg legs, the parrots, the hidden treasure maps with an 'X'—it all started right here.

​But at the absolute heart of this swashbuckling tale isn't just gold; it's one of the most intense, complex dynamics in literary history: Long John Silver and Jim Hawkins.

​Silver is a charming villain, a ruthless mutineer who genuinely develops a fatherly affection for young Jim. Jim is an ordinary child thrust into extraordinary danger, looking up to Silver even as the betrayal unfolds around him. They truly like each other, but they are trapped on opposite sides of a bloody mutiny.

​For any actor, undertaking these roles is a masterclass in dramatic tension. It requires balancing charm with menace, and innocence with fierce bravery.

​But they aren't the only juicy roles up for grabs in our upcoming new musical adaptation...

There's the flamboyant and somewhat foolish Squire Trelawney, the pragmatic Captain Smollett, Jim's long suffering mother Mrs Hawkins, the eccentric maroon Benjamin Gunn, a whole host of grisly pirate mutineers, the loyal servants who fight them, and many more besides. To make this classic story more gender-balanced, several key roles have been cleverly reimagined as female characters, offering fantastic new opportunities for local actors to sink their teeth into some brilliantly gritty, dramatic material.

​Whether you want to lead the mutiny or defend the ship, we need an incredible ensemble to bring the crew to life.

🏴‍☠️ TREASURE ISLAND: CHARACTER PROFILES & CASTING NOTES 🏴‍☠️

Following last week's casting call announcement, here's a closer look at the roles up for grabs in our musical adaptation of Treasure Island, coming up at The Grove Theatre this December! 🗺️⚓

From the plucky heroism of young Jim Hawkins to the cunning charm of Long John Silver, this show is absolutely packed with fantastic material for performers. We’ve lined up a brilliant score filled with traditional sea shanties, gorgeous harmonies, and fast-paced musical numbers.

🎭 THE CHALLENGE: A TRUE ENSEMBLE PIECE

This production isn't just an adventure on the high seas—it’s going to be an incredibly rewarding challenge for our cast.

The Doubling Challenge: Because Robert Louis Stevenson's world is so vast, several of our actors will be pulling double duty! For example, some of our cast will start on land as part of the tavern guests at the Admiral Benbow Inn, before slipping aboard the Hispaniola to play members of Silver's mutinous crew. It’s a fantastic opportunity to showcase your versatility and play completely different dynamics in Act 1 and Act 2.

Vocals & Patter: With a score adapted to showcase rich harmonies, gritty storytelling songs and snappy, comic patter, we are looking for strong actor-singers who can bring distinct personalities to every single note.

Whether you're aiming for a major principal role or want to be part of a powerhouse, tight-knit ensemble of pirates and shipmates, we want to hear from you.

Ready to channel your inner pirate? 🏴‍☠️🌊

​Our upcoming production of Treasure Island at The Grove Theatre (11th-13th Dec) is going to be packed full of authentic, rousing sea shanties—and we need your voices to help us bring them to life!

​Sea shanties were built for community singing—they're catchy, full of energy, and incredibly fun to learn. Whether you are a seasoned vocalist or have only ever sung in the shower, these traditional working songs are the perfect way to build confidence and enjoy singing as a group.

Auditions for this production will be in early September and ​we're currently looking for local performers to join the company. If you’ve ever fancied learning a few proper maritime choruses (and maybe a bit of light opera thrown into the mix!), now is the perfect time to get involved.

Huge thanks to all who came and supported our production of The Mikado Reimagined as The McAdo this weekend. We had a wonderful time performing at the beautiful Royal Hippodrome Theatre and were delighted with the many lovely comments from audience members, who all loved this Scottish spin on a G&S favourite.

Thanks also to everyone who helped make it happen: the production team, cast, orchestra, front of house team, crew, set builders, prop makers, make-up and costume helpers and anyone else who pitched in to make it a success. And of course, to our friends at G&S Austin, who allowed us to use their clever adaptation.

Time for a little rest now, but we'll be back in December with a new musical adaptation of Treasure Island featuring music from G&S as well as sea shanties and other light opera.
