🦴 MODERN TOTAL HIP REPLACEMENT (THR) — DO YOU KNOW THE COMPONENTS?
Have you ever wondered what a modern Total Hip Replacement (THR) implant actually looks like and how all the different parts work together? 🤔
A THR is not just one implant — it is a carefully engineered system made up of several components:
🔹 Femoral Stem – sits inside the femur and provides the foundation for the femoral component.
🔹 Femoral Head – attaches to the stem and acts as the new “ball” of the hip joint.
🔹 Acetabular Shell/Cup – is positioned within the acetabulum and provides the new socket.
🔹 Polyethylene or Ceramic Liner – sits inside the acetabular cup and provides the bearing surface for the femoral head.
🔹 Taper Junction – connects the femoral head securely to the femoral stem.
🔄 HOW DOES IT WORK?
The femoral stem is fixed within the femur, while the femoral head articulates smoothly inside the acetabular liner.
Together, these components recreate the ball-and-socket mechanism of the hip, allowing movements such as flexion, extension, abduction, adduction and rotation.
