“Always coming out ahead. Always winning things.”

There are moments in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest when the ward almost convinces itself it can become somewhere else.

This rehearsal shot catches one of them: McMurphy and Billy in a brief pocket of laughter before Act Two begins to darken. The party scene has its chaos, its mischief, and its strange tenderness — but, as ever in this play, freedom is never allowed to remain uncomplicated for long.

Lord Po***ck has been murdered in his Cornish manor, which is careless of him but extremely useful for an evening’s entertainment.

Expect family secrets, unlikely companions, suspicious behaviour, supper, drinks, and enough double entendres to make a vicar drop his vol-au-vent.

Gather your table, inspect the evidence, accuse the wrong person with confidence, and see if you can unmask the murderer. The winning team gets a bottle of bubbly — assuming, of course, they live long enough to collect it.

What an absolutely wonderful production of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory today with our youngest students group!

The Grove briefly became a basketball court this week as rehearsals continued for One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.

At the start of Act Two, the patients discover that all you really need for a game is a ball, a little optimism, and Ruckley standing in roughly the right place.

It is one of those moments where the play’s humour and humanity come together: scrappy, restless, chaotic, and alive.
