Get ready — Halley’s Comet is officially heading back toward Earth.
After reaching the most distant point in its orbit around the Sun, Halley’s Comet has begun its long return journey toward the inner Solar System. On December 9, 2023, the legendary comet reached aphelion at roughly 35 astronomical units from the Sun, marking the turning point in its 76 year orbit. Now, this ancient icy traveler is gradually accelerating back toward the Sun, beginning the countdown to one of the most anticipated sky events of the century.
Last seen in 1986, Halley’s Comet fascinated astronomers and space agencies around the world, with multiple spacecraft sent to study it up close. But its next appearance could be even more spectacular. Astronomers predict that when Halley reaches perihelion in July 2061, viewing conditions from Earth will be far better than during its previous visit. In 1986, the comet appeared relatively dim because it was positioned on the far side of the Sun. In 2061, however, Halley is expected to pass on the same side of the Sun as Earth, making it brighter, clearer, and potentially visible to millions of people without telescopes.
The return of Halley’s Comet is expected to become one of the defining astronomical events of the 21st century, offering a once in a lifetime opportunity for a new generation to witness the Solar System’s most famous cosmic visitor.
