We are delighted to announce that the narrator for our upcoming performance of the music from Purcell’s King Arthur is none other than Durham Cathedral’s very own precentor, the Rev’d Canon Michael Hampel. A Durham alumnus and strong participator in its theatre scene during his time at the university, he will be outlining the non-musical sections of the work (written by John Dryden) to supplement our performance of Purcell’s music.

Dunelm Consort and Players presents: KING ARTHUR

Wizards and nymphs, spirits and satyrs, soldiers and shepherds, gods and men - Purcell’s lively celebration of Arthurian legend and pagan folklore is among the first British operas and is an influential but under-appreciated part of the operatic canon.

From vibrant battle scenes to touching love songs, pastoral merrymaking and rowdy drinking choruses to moving meditations on the beauty of Britain, King Arthur really has it all.

Supernatural powers meddle in the earthly disputes between the Saxons and the Britons, who go to battle in patriotic pursuit of honour, glory, and the chance to cement their place in history.

Come (if you dare) and see this marvellous work performed in Durham Castle on the 7th May, conducted by Barney Howard.

Tickets on sale soon.
