Working on 3 faces at once is a new one for me! Just getting in basic values and then I’ll revert back to the standard practice of painstakingly and obsessively painting each and every inch. You can’t rush a good thing!

*ARTIST UPDATE* Up on the shelf this one goes for now so that I can get some distance and think the piece over before the final touches! This painting is part of the collection for my first ever solo exhibition in July called β€˜The Cost of Living: a Series of Portraits.’ I’m excited and nervous about the whole thing, I sit with these deep thoughts about people and living and what it takes to live a good life, but to share them with the world in this way is an emotional undertaking! Fortunately I have wonderful sitters who are willing to share their stories and reflections on life and I hope you will all find the project heartwarming and interesting enough to show them, and me, your support!

There are many stages and little decisions that go into painting a pet portrait, like how to make fur seem furry and how many colours go into making a white dog look white without using pure white. And it all matters because a little bit of someone's heart is going on display in their home and you have to get it right! Oil painting has been the best way for me to capture the character and sense of your beloved pets (and people), I love painting in a way that makes it seem like if you touch the painting you would feel fur, skin or fabric...there is something so sumptuous about an oil painting! 🎨

A special commission from the Carberry family of Dad Brian and his much loved Mum Sally who sadly passed away earlier this year. Losing such a wonderful presence in your family leaves a hole in your heart and yet somehow the world keeps spinning. Art has a way of pausing the world, taking a moment to acknowledge and honour what has been and what is important in life. Painted, as always, with love. πŸ’–

56 days before the world changed and lockdown came into effect I had just finished this floral painting to display at my upcoming wedding. Little did this girl know what a story her wedding would become because of covid. This was before a career in painting, before I had even heard of water mixable oils. It was my first painting that I felt completely proud of and feasted my eyes over and it hangs in the living room of my little family home five years later serving as a reminder of the wild and beautiful ride that our wedding was and how through all the ups and downs then and now, God is indeed good. It hits different when the artwork on your walls means something special to you. I'd love to give to people something in their home that catches their eye daily and brings comfort and a smile, like this painting does for me. Portraits, florals, landscapes, pets...whatever the subject, it's the story behind them that makes a painting special!
