On 31 October, Scottish Dance Theatre celebrates four decades of groundbreaking dance with a very special 40th Anniversary Gala at Dundee Rep Theatre.

For one night only, current artists, celebrated alumni and audience favourites come together for an evening spanning the company’s past, present and future.

The gala programme features repertoire highlights including excerpts from O’ Chiadain an Lo by Artistic Director Joan Clevillé, Moving Cloud by Sofia Nappi, and Rotten Work by Emilie Leriche. The evening also includes performances of The Bull, the Princess, and the Hero by Matthew William Robinson, not for glory by Charlotte McLean, Jack Anderson and Malin Lewis, and RECollect by Bridie Gane.

And, in a very special moment, 40 by 40 will bring 40 former and current Scottish Dance Theatre dancers together on stage for an improvised performance.

Audiences can also explore our walkthrough archive exhibition and celebrate the launch of Memory in Motion, a new book by Dr Andy Henry telling the story of Scottish Dance Theatre from 1986 to today.

Concluding the evening, artists and audiences will be invited onto the stage for a disco featuring Dundee-based DJ Peace & Jam to continue the celebrations.

Photographer Camilla Greenwell on her collaboration with Scottish Dance Theatre’s Artistic Director Joan Clevillé: "Joan and I shared mood boards and discussed ideas beforehand, such as props and lighting, to bring something of the theatrical world into the shoot, while still keeping the rehearsal space visible. It was a mix of both worlds, in a sense. From there, I worked with the dancers both individually and in groups, alongside Joan and Rehearsal Director Katye Coe. Working one-on-one gave us space to improvise and try variations on a movement rather than just capturing something fixed, which is always exciting, you never quite know what you'll land on”

Through her photography, Camilla seeks out glimmers of surrealism within the everyday, as well as mundane moments in the fantastical. Creating stunning visual narratives, she invites the viewer in on her process as much as the final image.

Part 2 of our photographic series with Camilla Greenwell: "I'm actually a terrible dancer! I started out in acting, but I was very shy and never felt comfortable in front of an audience. I studied fine art at university, making sculptural, abstract sets and objects which I then photographed, and the photographs became the work itself. I think that interest in the sculptural form and playing with reality also influences my work with movement, even though they seem worlds apart.

Not being a dancer myself is probably both a help and a hindrance. I don't have the technical knowledge of someone who's trained for years, but I think it means I come at it from a different perspective. I'm usually trying to capture a feeling or a detail rather than something technically perfect. I'm as interested in the process and the story behind the movement as I am in the finished performance. So my approach is really about understanding the story and the people behind the movement, then trying to capture a glimpse of that, or something unexpected."

Celebrating 40 years of Scottish Dance Theatre with photographer Camilla Greenwell, capturing the artistry of our company dancers.

“We wanted to create a separate series that focused on the dancers as individuals. Working in the studio meant we had the space and time to work one-on-one with each dancer, which is always such a nice way to work - there's room to improvise, and to find things you wouldn't necessarily plan for. The dancers were amazing, so willing to just throw themselves into the process with you."

Camilla Greenwell is a director and photographer whose work explores human connection. With a background in visual arts and dance, she has spent the past decade capturing the intersection of reality and performance, often focusing on movement, intimacy and the stories that unfold within those spaces.
