Energies for today: Strength
Strength is often seen as a positive card, but there are times I’ve seen this as “Lord, give me strength!” We don’t always want to have to be strong, but today might have you channeling some good, old feminine rage. Do you feel disrespected in some way? Strength corresponds to Leo, and Leo does not want to feel like an also-ran.

Advice: Five of Wands
There’s a message in this card that amped up energy can be a good thing as long as you don’t take it too seriously. Treat it like a game, one where other players are a requirement. That way you’re less likely to get annoyed at others, be better prepared for interjections and maybe even find a chance to let off some steam in a more productive way. And remember that you might not be the only one petitioning the Almighty for a bit of patience! We’re all fighting some kind of battle, after all. That disrespect you’ve been feeling is likely not intentional.

Outcome: Two of Wands
We’ve lowered the intensity now, moving down from a fiery Major, to a five, then to the two. There’s more control expressed here too, with the two hands firmly gripping the wands. The two of wands can also signal a plan, whether creating one or being clued in, finally, by others. The road ahead looks more calm and controlled.

Card for Blue Monday: The Sun

The warm, loving message of this card today is not to dismiss the January gloom, or to try and force good vibes only.

You are loved, even if you’ve not been yourself for a while.

You’re allowed to feel down sometimes. And it’s ok to take yourself away to somewhere quiet, away from all the noise.

But you also want to make time for the things that bring you joy. Sometimes the sun breaks through the clouds and we can stop to soak up its light and warmth. It’s a moment to savour that feeling that you can feel good again.

The Sun is always there, even when it’s obscured by the clouds and the Earth’s tilted away for a while.

And it will always rise again tomorrow.

Sometimes a tarot writer will try to offer a ‘scientific’ explanation of how card readings work. I’ve read statements that it doesn’t matter which card turns up, whatever the card you will somehow focus your thoughts and find the answer within yourself.

I don’t buy it. I think it sells tarot short.

It discounts symbolism, symmetry and the important of repeated motifs. Why have countless shelves groaning under the weight of books offering meanings, meditations and histories, if it doesn’t matter which card shows up?

This idea patently ignores the endless incidents when just the perfect card that shows up.

I pulled some cards using a spread on shadow work, by the tarotdiagnosis. The first two relate to the shadow and its origin. That shrouded woman in both cards is no accident - she is at the heart of the matter. The second two cards are how this shadow is projected and what to do instead. Both aces, both talking about the fundamental impacts. To change something at the root you need to address it at the root.

I’m not going into much more detail about the reading. Just wanted to put my tuppence worth out there about the supposed scientific explanation. Maybe it’s just my anecdotes, and I’m aware the plural of anecdote is not data, but anecdotes are case studies. I feel we need more examination of them before we might claim to know how this works.

Ultimately, at this present time we don’t know how tarot works. Just that it does.

It’s hump day, on the main week of the year that people are most likely to quit their job. The long nights and monotony chafe against your dreams and passions, and today can feel very “Do or die”.

But just hold on a second. Bring that energy back down to earth and remember you’ve got responsibilities. It’s not fun or sexy, but the rent needs paid and heating is still expensive.

The answer, predictably, lies somewhere in the middle. There will be times your day-to-day will make demands of you, and times you will have more freedom to pursue your own desires. Don’t fight it, go with it.

If you can clear more off that to-do list today you’ll have more time for planning and action tomorrow, towards what’s really making you want to get out of bed each day.

Notice the wand behind the figure on the third card? It’s strapped to the wall, meaning his hand is free to hold that globe of possibility. Get your supports nailed down so you can do the same.

The Fool is my official stalker card these days! But a heartwarming reminder to be optimistic during the long nights of winter.

On first glance it might seem as though there’s encouragement to join the festivities of the four of wands (it’s my work’s Xmas party today), but it goes a bit deeper than that. It’s the Fool, not the three or cups, or the six of wands. Don’t NOT join in the merriment, but remember this is just a moment to savour; this is not your final destination. “He who kisses the joy as it flies lives in eternity’s sunrise.”

It also strikes me the similarities and differences between the Fool and the Page of Wands. The Page is the Fool before he’s packed his bags, but in his mind he’s already the Fool, hence why at this point he’s still not sure he ‘measures up’, but knows his true path lies ahead, on the other side of fear, waiting for him to take that leap.

What also strikes me is the background of the Fool and the page. They are reversed. If we flip over one we get the other. A message that the leap of faith the Fool requires means turning your world upside down? If so, enjoy the party today, it’s destined to be no more than a sweet memory.

3-cards for a very grey Monday:

Find magic in the mundane. Drink that first coffee with your intention for the day; carry a crystal that’s calling to you (my go-to is rose quartz); close your eyes and focus on your breathe on bus/train commute. Share an experience you’ve had that defies logic. Stay open to the subtle messages the universe is always sending you. Speak an affirmation.

We don’t always choose our circumstances but we can decide how we want to meet them. I choose to believe in magic 💫

Aside from the individual card meanings, doesn’t it look like the wheel has pulled the structure on the left on its side, so the hermit is approaching the Now from a different angle?

Fortune is rarely about personal autonomy, but how we can be buffeted by the winds of Fate. I’m starting the day in a positive mood but matters will take me outside of this and provide an opportunity for introspection, if I let them.

Doing a half marathon night run in Budapest tonight. Pulled a quick reading: energies for the race / advice / outcome. What a beautiful trio! The nine of pents says I’ve put the work in, now just enjoy it (ie don’t stress or push myself too hard). And the Moon is being literal here, I will get to marvel at the magic night
