I first made this balance almost 2 years ago, only it was in the late fall / winter season, covered in snow and ice.

Back then everything happened so fast with the way it had to materialize in the flow of an approaching snowstorm / freeze, and then abandoned to the elements shortly after. It felt slightly incomplete because I wanted to record the build.

so I returned last summer after Scotland, with intent to build it again in a different season, however was unable to recover all the same 9 rocks. Particularly the small round one under the top. Which makes sense as it was most likely to roll away in the spring melt. Prolly spent 2 solid days last year, looking, w no success.. and then 2 more days this year, still empty handed.

It wasn’t until I fully abandoned the search, and the hope I could rebuild this same structure, that something kinda curious happened. I started collecting some roundish rocks to build something new in a nearby spot. Made myself a seat, and began experimenting toward a new structure.

About 10 mins in, I picked up a newly collected rock but it seemed vaguely familiar. So I considered it for a sec, did a double take, pulled out my phone and scrolled back to the original build 2 years ago. It still took a min to fully register that this was actually the rock I’d bin searching for, for the last 2 years. It flew so far under my radar that I didn’t even remember where I’d just collected it from among all the other egg-like rocks. Coulda sworn I looked everywhere it coulda rolled. Coulda sworn I would remember as soon as I picked it up. But apparently my projection of its particular shape based on previous camera angles was not accurate to its true 3D form..

Needless to say I abandoned the new abstraction to revisit this quite challenging structure, and finally realized the incomplete vision from 2 years ago. This time I gave it a little more time to relatively master all its angles and contacts.

It musta taken at least 10 failed recording attempts before I relearned the particular muscle memory to zero it consistently in under 20 mins, let alone my typical goal of under 10.

Final build: 8 mins 💅

A moment to reflect with a bonafide master of balance

Wee bitta witchcraft at what remains of Dunbar castle… which has since become a summertime kittiwake stronghold.

Was reading into the history a bit and “Dunbar” came from Gaelic, roughly meaning ‘fort of the point’ or ‘summit fortress’, for its longtime strategic geography in preventing English sea invasions during the wars of independence. Dunbar castle repelled a 5-month naval siege in 1338, under the direction of “Black Agnes” or Agnes Randolph, a 14th-century Scottish noblewoman and Countess of Dunbar at the time… “She’s famous for her fierce defense of the castle. She refused to surrender and openly mocked the enemy’s weapons. When the English threatened to execute her captured brother, she insisted they do so, as she would only inherit his lands.”

Despite the very badass history, that’s not what attracted me to this place initially.

Fun fact — the kittiwakes (white sea birds, kinda like mini sea gulls) return to this castle ruin all the way from South Africa, for each summer’s breeding season. I think they’re set to fly back South in the coming weeks when their babies can properly fly. The castle ruin in this frame holds hundreds of nests at least. The air is thick with salt, seaweed, and screams of hundreds, if not thousands of these birds, culminating in a kind of thunderous silence in the sirens and crashing tides.

I’ve become mildly obsessed with this spot over the years, and not entirely sure why. It is by far the most energetic zone I’ve come across in Dunbar — arguably its energetic zero point — possibly due to its history, but moreso for me its RICH bird activity.. and exceptional rocks!

I only got one go with this balance, as the top’s contact edge broke with its first collapse. The headspace during this creation was pure foolish flow state — where something flowed through me!

It’s increasingly difficult to scratch the technical/aesthetic itch, but occasionally I can still surprise myself

The challenge here was 3-fold. Access limited by tide levels. Situated directly under several kittiwake nests ☔️. Figuring out a way to sit in order to avoid slips / broken fingers under a relatively massive top

Image 1: this was the balance I settled on to build live for ppl on the Saturday of European Land Art Festival.. I switched things up a bit this year in that I normally run away from crowds and build more for my camera than other people — relatively hard to access. but this year I planted a balance zone at the back of the beach facing out to the sea, so people could see the balance and process up close.

Image 5: My preference in these events is usually to focus on raw creation and random logistical things, Like these stepping stones that became necessary for people to safely access the beach. I suppose my stepstones might be laughable to any skilled mason but I quite enjoyed meticulously placing each step with limited time, to support heavy foot traffic throughout the Sunday. By the end they still held solid as prescribed.

Images 6 & 7: another background task I highly enjoy is choosing the 2 sets of 7 stones for the head-to-head timed balance competition. As we can’t replicate rocks, the sets have to be relatively similar in size and balanceability for all skills levels. Pictured are my go’s with each set.

There are a few regular faces missing, but the common denominator among all of us is this ritual of getting together and hosting an open celebration of sharing earth art. Image 11: post-festival melancholy (“reaching for the dead”) was quite cathartic walking around the site with James Craig Page the night after the festival, kinda like visiting an old archeological site with all the decaying earth art scattered across the beach.

I stumbled upon this sweet geological divide in the bedrock the other day during European Land Art Festival as I wandered down the coastline… Can’t remember what caught my attention first, the brilliant sandstone textures or the abrupt change in coloration, but I had to stop, which eventually turned into 3ish days of tide play.

All these cracks were predominantly empty or filled with tide debris like small rocks of various colors and seaweed, washed in and deposited each day during high tides, so curiosity led me to accentuate that natural process by filling in all the deepest channels with the surrounding abundance of ‘chips off the old block’ in order to highlight the natural fractures and dominant colors.

I didn’t intend to revisit after the first day, but was pulled back on day 2 to observe what high tide did to my intervention of red rocks.

The process then became using the entropy from high tide to kinda bake the reds into the cracks, as it washed away the excess each time, while further defining where the channels of red rocks would naturally set.

I didn’t really know what was doing at first, and ultimately the discovery thru process dictated the result.

I kinda love the ‘finished’ aesthetic of this in that it blurs the line of natural tide activity and my own interventions. An extremely site-specific, collab with Nature.

And, of all the things I love about creative process, I suppose the spontaneous, novel, and unexpected discoveries in uncontrolled environments, are among my favorite.

Product of ~3 solitary days in Roslin Glen.. I originally went to revisit an old balance spot (from 2018) upstream, to hopefully alchemize old ghosts — which was mildly unsatisfying. . . But necessary.

2nd and 3rd day I was redirected toward this new zone just downstream by a local witch, ultimately yielding this extremely fragile sunlit view and proportional satisfaction 🗿🥷🏼

Also, European Land Art Festival starts today! At belhaven beach, Dunbar. If you’re in the area, come PLAY! 🌚🐙

The elements were quite extreme this year at kelburn garden party. This was ~ 1 hour before the water accumulated enough to wash away most of this garden. It was logistically too wet to do much more camera work than this but grateful I went out on this Saturday morning to capture the garden before it was swept away, and it was quite special to share and capture the moment with this woman who was one of the rare souls to wander through the steady rain that morning.

Big up to and for hosting my work once again along with a small crew of fellow earth artists from .

Looking forward to reuniting with all of them and more next week in Dunbar for the 10th annual European land art festival.

Currently soaking up some downtime in a quiet neighborhood next to Roslin chapel, south of Edinburgh.. yes the one from the Dan Brown books!.. gonna revisit an old balance spot in Roslin glen that I first balanced back in 2018!

Analogue projections

These effects were kinda tough to capture as they usually disappeared as fast as I could plant a video camera. First bit is from the sun filtering through trees directly onto the rock.. Second bit is sunlight reflecting off the water, onto the shaded rock. Occasionally it seemed both effects appeared simultaneously but was never really sure. First bit could have a bit of both.
