Lyra, our giant anteater, ‘nose’ exactly where keepers have hidden her mealworm treats in her enrichment tube!

Watch as she sniffs them out with her long nose – which is perfectly designed to get into small openings in ant hills!

Anteaters have no teeth, but use their long tongues to lap up food.

It’s International Lynx Day!

It’s an annual celebration to raise awareness about the conservation of the four wild lynx species.

Here at DZC we have Carpathian lynx, Daisy, Dave and their son Dakota, who have recently moved back into their new-look home after its makeover.

If you’ve visited us over the past few weeks, you’ll have noticed the metal structure of their outdoor area is a lot higher, giving them more opportunities to explore and utilise higher spaces.

We’ve also added more complex enrichment opportunities too, with a larger climbing structure as well as incorporating some of the elements the lynx liked during their temporary holiday accommodation in the binturong habitat (who were relocated to another part of the zoo!) including the triangular shaped platform.

Following visitor feedback, we’ve kept the visitor viewing tunnel, but made it higher and accessible for all, with windows throughout the tunnel now and not just the end.

Plus, we’ve also built a specific off-show training area alongside, which will enable keepers to carry out training with all the lynx together at the same time and we’ve also joined forces with Dudley College students, who are designing and building specific training crates for use in this new area.

Make sure you take a look the next time you’re on site!

Are you stuck for a last-minute Father’s Day gift?

How about treating him to a ticket to watch one of our upcoming open-air films, or take out a year-long adoption for one of our amazing animal dads?

If your dad is a film fan, why not get him tickets to enjoy a screening of The Goonies on Friday 7th August, or A Nightmare on Elm Street the evening after (Sat 8th) – with both films being held in the grounds of Dudley Castle.
Tickets cost £14 each and can be booked online.

Or if he’s an animal lover, a personalised adoption makes a fantastic gift! We’ve got a huge variety of species on-site to choose from, including lots of wonderful dads of our own - Djimat the orangutan (who celebrates his birthday on Father’s Day!), Chester the spider monkey, Twenke the bush dog and Reggie the sloth for starters!
Adoption packages start from just £41.50.

And don’t forget dads can come and visit the zoo for free over Father’s Day weekend (June 20 -21) with a full-paying child or adult and enjoy our family fun day!
