I started out as a street entertainer back in 1987 at Alton Towers. For many years I appeared across the country at festivals, shopping center promotions, corporate days, working with companies such as Tesco, Whitbreadโs, Kew Gardens, Hilton Hotels and St. Katherineโs Dock to name but a few.
Around 1992 saw the launch of my first outdoor circus. The circus attended many one-day festivals and events. An early version of Popup you might say!
My burning ambition had always been to run a circus on a much bigger scale. In 1997 I launched Toppers Circus, touring theatres in southern England with a cast of International Artists. A successful winter indoor show would never satisfy me, I wanted a proper big top, to take a show onto village greens, and run a longer season.
In 2006 with my good friend Tolly Mack, we started Circus Normandie. First, we worked with schools then had to develop the season to include village greens, garden centers and corporate events. Today Circus Normandie is run by Tolly and his sister Nina with admin support from myself.
A few years ago, I spotted a trend in how the public wanted to view circuses, how PTAs needed to keep ticket prices low and were getting shorter staffed plus how public perception had changed towards touring circuses.
So, I started a program of research, discovering what it now required, how other companies were operating, looking at more effective ways of transporting a big show in just one truck or box trailer.
Then with an EEC grant I launched Popup Circus. Giving good quality family entertainment with old-fashioned values in a magical setting.
In a few years the popularity has grown, so that in 2019 there were 3 touring units of Popup Circus covering the UK. I will launch a fourth unit dedicated to the North of England in 2020. Although the company is expanding, I have kept the all-important personal service, you can still speak to me about your future booking.
