🎠🌍🌏🌎 TODAY, WE BEGIN…

1st September.

For some, it’s simply the first day of a new month.

But for us, it’s the beginning of something very special.

❤️ WORLD FUN FAIR MONTH ❤️

For the whole of September, we’re going to celebrate the world of the fairground — but not just the rides.

Because behind every fair there are people.

Behind every Showman there is a family, a story and a tradition.

Behind every fairground is a town, city or village that has welcomed it.

And behind every visit are memories that can last a lifetime.

🗺️ We’ll discover WHERE THE FAIR IS — across the UK and around the world.

👑 We’ll celebrate ROYAL CHARTER FAIRS and the unique heritage they represent.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 We’ll meet the PEOPLE BEHIND THE FAIR — the families, Showmen, who make it all happen.

🏘️ And we’ll celebrate THE FAIR & ITS COMMUNITY — the special relationship between fairgrounds and the places they return to, year after year.

We’ll share stories.

We’ll share photographs.

We’ll look back at the past.

We’ll celebrate the present.

And we’ll look towards the future.

Because a fairground isn’t just something that arrives out of the blue and it is so much more than noise and lights.

It’s people.
It’s heritage.
It’s culture.
It’s community.
It’s memories.

And for many, it’s home. ❤️

So, wherever you are in the world…

🌎 Tell us about your fair.

📍 Where is it?
🗓️ When does it visit?
❤️ What does it mean to you?
📸 And what’s your favourite fairground memory?

Let’s make September a celebration of everyone who makes the fairground what it is.

Happy World Fun Fair Month! 🎠❤️🌎

, July 12th, 1939, details of the will of Charles Spooner were published. He left £17,462, net. That’s over £900,000 in today’s money. Charles had died on March 28th that year in St Modwen's Nursing Home, at Burton, following an operation. He was 67.

Charles’s childhood was marred by tragedy. He lost his father, mother and brother in the space of three months when he was just eight. He was brought up by an uncle and aunt who encouraged his love of art and wood carving and helped him set up his first business in the yard of Burton’s Swan Hotel.

Tragically, his first wife Matilda (known as Annie) died in 1895 after a year of marriage and within days of giving birth to the couple’s first child, John (known as Jack).

Two years later, Charles married Rose Ann Orton, eldest daughter of his long term business collaborator George Orton and they went on to have three daughters.

Charles drew designs for new fairground rides as well as carving and leading a team of carvers to deliver stunning decorative work to show families in this country and abroad. He worked with George Orton on the interiors and exteriors of living wagons and showfronts as well as fairground rides. His son Jack followed him into the business, starting as a 14-year-old apprentice.
