The Archbishop of Canterbury has issued an emotional apology for the Church of England’s role in historical forced adoptions, acknowledging the “pain, trauma and stigma” experienced by thousands of mothers and children between 1949 and 1976.

An estimated 185,000 babies born to unmarried mothers were adopted during this period in England and Wales, with tens of thousands believed to have passed through Church-linked homes. Archbishop Dame Sarah Mullally said, “You have nothing to be ashamed of, the shame is ours,” as the Church expressed deep regret for past practices.
